Boycott Florida!

Florida NAACP moves towards initiating a travel advisory for Florida

TAMPA, Fla. (WFTS) — It's what keeps Florida going; tourism. Visit Florida said 137.6 million people visited here in 2022, the most ever. In 2021, tourism brought $101.9 billion dollars into the state's economy.

"Florida is a nice place to be. You got your beaches, you got your tourists, you see people all over the world," said Gregory Franklin as he strolled the Tampa Riverwalk.

But the Florida State Chapter of the NAACP has its sights set on hitting the state where it hurts most.

"We are letting our voices be heard, and we are just letting people know that we're not gonna take it. We're not just gonna sit still. We're gonna stand up and we're gonna fight. And when we fight, we win," said Hillsborough County Chapter President Yvette Lewis.

Over the weekend, the Florida State NAACP unanimously voted to ask the NAACP National Board to issue a travel advisory. The advisory would ask people to forego visiting and moving to the sunshine state.

"Saying you don't want AP African American Studies here because they have certain topics in it, certain categories, certain words in it. You don't want companies to have the word diversity, equity and inclusion because it has institutional racism in their policy. You know, it takes us back. And we've been fighting so hard," Lewis said.

This isn't the first time a group has pushed for a travel advisory or boycott.

Our plan seems to be working!

A former teacher of mine is teaching one of sixty AP African American History across the country. Being friends with him on Facebook he regularly posts pictures from class and what the topic of the day.

The complaint I’ve heard from other black people who have studied the syllabus is that it is too focused on racism and oppression. Their argument is racism and oppression is certainly a part of the black experience in America but it’s not the only thing. The black experience encompasses far more than that. Of course there are others who don’t see it that way regarding the syllabus.

I’ve seen people say by not allowing this course it means we aren’t teaching about slavery, civil rights etc in school. That’s false. Those things are rightfully being taught in basic history class. If it was only being taught in AP African American history class then very few kids in the country would be exposed to it and that just isn’t the case. (This isn’t justifying not teaching the course but rather pointing out the misrepresentation about it.)

I’m no Florida expert but to my understanding large numbers of people in the northeast/Midwest own homes/condos in Florida. Should they simply not visit them or should they sell them to comply with the boycott and make the state feel economic pain?

Very true. Mostly liberal democrats from the Northeast. Do you actually think they give a fuck about any of this? Of course not.

There are bad apples in every group. That’s equivalent to someone saying because of Jan 6th all white people or all Republicans shouldn’t be welcomed somewhere.

States want people coming and spending money in them.

Of course states want them, its free money, but the citizens who have to deal with the crime/violence/destruction see it differently.

As a kid during the '80's I remember seeing national reports of spring break in Florida and how awesome it looked. Of course they would make reference to trouble the kids caused. It was always a trade off for the cities, the needed revenue but having to deal with all the issues associated with it. But I never saw anyone suggest white people shouldn't be invited or welcomed to Florida. I don't think anyone wants crime but this idea of saying Florida would want black people going elsewhere doesn't ring right.

Drunk kids are going to have some problems but since those halcyon days of the 80s the level of trouble has been ratcheting up and up and up to the levels we see being reported this year.

Its not white people causing the serious violence.

Anecdotal but my brother-in-law is black. He's the President of a Silicon Valley tech company. He has relatives that broke racial barriers in both law and medicine. The idea that people like him, and my nieces and nephews, shouldn't be allowed to come to Florida because there are other black people who commit crimes just doesn't sit right with me. I go back to the Jan 6th example and people claiming the actions of a few represent millions of Republicans. No, it doesn't.

It's a really slippery slope in today's world trying to tell people of a certain race they aren't welcomed somewhere (like an entire state). That's no bueno.

Move there instead! Just like a lot of people do!
* They have the lowest taxes to pay for your government corruption of practically anywhere else in the nation!
* They have both alligators and crocodiles. Fascinating creatures, actually. Just keep your distance.
* Excellent golfing.
* Excellent retirement community (The Villages). Primarily conservative.
* Ron DeSantis is governor, a staunch conservative.
* No masks. No vaccine requirements. No power for the Church of Covid. Live life and be happy breathing the fresh air!
* Always green.
* Surface water is sparking clear in most places.
* Close to major cruise lines.
* Almost never freezes. Like summer most of the time!
* Real Bermuda grass. Easy to care for.
* Woke bullshit outlawed in the schools.
* Close to major theme parks and amusement parks.
* Unique bar hopping in the Keys.
* See the creepy Everglades for yourself!
* Close to Cape Canaveral...America's space port!
* Wide variety of snakes. Some pythons are large enough to use as ten year line markers on football fields!
* Home of Sun and Fun, one of the largest airshows in the country!
* excellent boating, scuba diving, and other watersports!
* easy access to the Caribbean islands.
* Escaped Cubans, primarily conservative. Help them celebrate their freedom! They paid dearly for it!
* Democrats hate the place more and more.

Of course, there are downsides in every State. In Florida:
* blind and elderly drivers that like to travel at 3mph on freeways.
* highways under constant construction with no apparent chance of completion.
* occasional hurricanes making a mess out of coastal communities and beaches.
* Disney world, possibly the most expensive place on Earth.
* Florida man (a descriptive term referring to oddball individuals that like to do very strange things, frequently naked, frequently in a Walmart, sometimes both!).
* organized crime, particularly in Miami. Most of the drugs in the State come through organized crime.
* Kudzu (a creeping vine related to Morning Glory but grows much faster, up to a foot a day).
* sinkholes, usually caused by poor drainage management.
* monkees. They can be aggressive and will steal anything not nailed down. Fortunately, their numbers so far are relatively few.
* crappy pink flamingo statues in many yards.
* there are still Democrats in the State.

All in all, a nice place to live!
