It's tedious to explain the same stuff over and over. The short version is that the racial tensions in the past were along the Mason Dixon line. Northern Democrats like Kennedy were liberal and wanted racial equality. Southern Democrats did not. When Kennedy was elected, the Dixiecrats became Republicans.

It's more accurate to say that today's GOP has its ideological roots in the racist southern Democratic party.
