Senator Dianne Feinstein to Retire at the End of Her Term

speaker of house is from California

I assume we all know the difference between the House of Representatives and the Senate but you know what they say about assuming.

Kevin McCarthy won a House seat. That's not a statewide election. A Senate seat is. Outside of Arnold no Republican has won a statewide election in California in like 25 years and its certainly not going to change now. When Feinstein won re-election in 2018 her opponent in the General was a (liberal) Democrat. A Republican couldn't even get on the ballot. It's highly likely it will be the same again next year. All the top Democratic challengers are to the left of Feinstein.

That there are pockets of the state that are right leaning doesn't change the overall dynamic of the state. Biden beat Trump by like 30%. Offering grace, it's arguably understandable someone not from the state might not truly understand the local politics. No Republican is winning here. Hell, Republicans will be lucky to find a candidate to run for the seat.

everything takes time, when the state is extra crispy from the fires due to decades of water table abuse, it could change

There were a couple of people on this board that were sure Trump was going to beat Biden in California in 2020 using similar logic, the state is F'd up and this time will be different. He lost by 30 points.

Everything does take time and its going to be awhile for Republicans to win again statewide in California. That's an unfortunate political reality.

Yeah California is a shithole

WASHINGTON — Senator Dianne Feinstein, Democrat of California, announced on Tuesday that she would not run for re-election in 2024 but would finish out her term in Congress, making official a retirement that was long assumed by her colleagues who had grown concerned about her memory issues and clearing the way for what is expected to be a costly and competitive race for the seat she has held for three decades.

Ms. Feinstein, 88, has had acute short-term memory issues for years that sometimes raise concern among those who interact with her. She has never acknowledged the problems.

I thought it was funny during her interview that her statement about her retirement had been published before she was ready to announce. Did you see that?

Already Schiff and Porter have indicated they're running for the open seat next cycle.
