Florida has really gone off the deep end under DeSantis in rewriting and restricting American history?!!

A book about late Afro-Puerto Rican MLB legend Roberto Clemente can't be found in the shelves of public school libraries in Florida's Duval County these days.

“Roberto Clemente: Pride of the Pittsburgh Pirates” by Jonah Winter and Raúl Colón — and other books about Latino figures such as the late Afro-Cuban salsa singer Celia Cruz and Justice Sonia Sotomayor — are among the more than 1 million titles that have been "covered or stored and paused for student use” at the Duval County Public Schools District,

.

School officials are in the process of determining if such books comply with state laws and can be included in school libraries.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed laws last year that require schools to rely on certified media specialists to approve which books can be integrated into classrooms. Guidance on how that would be implemented was provided to schools in December.

Books must align with state standards such as not teach K-3 students about gender identity and sexual orientation; not teach critical race theory, which examines systemic racism in American society, in public grade schools; and not include references to pornography and discrimination, according to the school district.

In January, 52 certified media specialists for Duval started reviewing about 1.5 million book titles, Sonya Duke-Bolden, a spokesperson with the public schools district told NBC News Friday. Close to 2,800 books have been approved by media specialists so far. Duke-Bolden did not say if more books were reviewed but not approved.

PEN America, a nonprofit group that advocates for free expression in literature, said in December that 176 elementary school books from their Essential Voices collection were among the titles removed from Duval County public school libraries.

I gather they are being reviewed regarding discrimination as the other banned topics seem unrelated.
I suppose Clemente did experience some discrimination in his career but he was actually a very positive force to countering it. Pittsburgh LOVED him. One of my school chums father was a local scout for the Pirates and obviously a huge fan not to mention a bona fide judge of baseball talent and he said Clemente was extraordinary. I spent a number of days over at their house when the Pirates were on TV and learning a lot from him.

Book banning won’t erase the people he’s trying to erase
Banning for freedom is like fucking for virginity.

It’s stupid. Better to consider what is age-appropriate. We rate movies. Why not books? At least for schools.

Good that you can see how stupid and ridiculous the DeSantis Cancel Culture has become.

The restrictions have forced schools to remove conventional books on civil rights, even if they have nothing to do with graduate-level critical race theory conceptions.

I’m curious how this is going to work for DeSantis, if at all, during the next election.

It’s one thing to throw red meat to a relatively small group of loud-mouthed racists, bigots and other dumbfucks, but it’s another in trying to appeal to 80 million voters to win an election. Especially the Independents.

Librarians and teachers have pushed the WOKE Religion hard.....this must be dealt with no less than it would need to be if the Christians were using are schools to indoctrinate the next general.

I have the definitive book about Roberto Clemente by David Maraniss. Clemente felt that his enormous talent was underappreciated but the Hall of Fame felt differently.

He was a five tool player, and, I believe, the best player ever from Latin America, including the Baby Bull, Orlando Cepeda.

My wife and I were in P.R. when he died and we went to his home. We were invited into his beautiful home but we declined. We could see the awards he had earned through the front door.

Clemente is revered in P.R. for his baseball talents but also for his humanitarian efforts. He died far too soon.
