1...Black shame . There is nothing to be ashamed of,....we have ALL been slaves,...some still are.

Slavery was also not unique to the US in the Americas. The French, British, Spanish, and Portuguese all used it too, often to a greater extent that in the American colonies or nation that followed. The only reason it was practiced was the need for cheap labor exceeded--greatly exceeded--the available supply and there were few or no alternatives to it. Indentured servitude and transport of prisoners was done, but these lacked anywhere close to the volume of warm bodies needed to do cheap labor--mostly agricultural and mining--in the Americas.

I listed two tried alternatives. I know you have no idea and have never heard of them before but they existed: Indentured servitude and convict transport. Neither supplied anywhere close to the manpower demands of agribusiness or mining.

Few nations by the 1700's in Europe were still feudal in nature with peasants tied to a feudal lord and the land.

I'm not opposed to it. But in an American History class (for example), I don't think it's necessary to teach about all of the slavery & oppression throughout world history so that students have more compassion for the decisions Americans made on that front.
