SAN ANTONIO – A U.S. Army hospital spokesman says the man suspected in a deadly shooting spree at Fort Hood, Texas, is conscious and able to talk.

Dewey Mitchell, a spokesman at Brooke Army Medical Center, says Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan remains in stable condition. Mitchell says Hasan has been awake and able to talk since he was taken off a ventilator Saturday.

Hasan is at Brooke Medical Center in San Antonio, about 150 miles southwest of Fort Hood.

Authorities say the 39-year-old Hasan opened fire at a processing center Thursday at Fort Hood, the country's largest military installation. Thirteen people were killed and 29 were wounded.

The rampage ended when civilian police shot Hasan.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information.

It seems to me that from his perspective, this is the worst punishment that could have happened to him. Given that he'd said all his goodbyes and done everything else that a person intending suicide might do, he certainly didn't expect to survive.

I'm just hoping he was just delusional, and that this wasn't some sort of Jihad.

From the bits that have been made public, it seems to have been a personal jihad, at least. Whether it was a part of something more organized is certainly being investigated, I'm sure.

He went to the same Mosque and at the same time as two of the 9-11 hijackers, and that cleric is a radical.

It's pretty much the worst possible intent, even if the result is the same. We really don't need any more of this religious warfare going down.

This whole incident has been disastrous for the credibility of the field of psychiatry, esp. in the military.

This is the first time that I have seen this reaction, and I'm curious as to why the O-bots fear this link.

OIC. This will mean Obama has failed to protect the US against Islamic terrorists, and with a possible link to 9-11....

HOLY SHIT! :good4u:

That's just me getting a headstart lampooning all the fearmongering the RightWing is going to be doing over this point in the coming weeks.

I'm not afraid of the link at all, in fact I can't wait til you RightWing cowards start calling for the systematic roundup and detainment of anyone who prayed at that particular mosque.

Yeah, that will look REAL good to the population at large.

Was he a radical bowling coach? Did people go there to learn that it is okay to use Bowling as an excuse to use suicide as a weapon against the heathenistic golfers?

Isn't that what the liberal hero, FDR, did to the Japanese and Italian Americans?:)

:-/

Probably the first case I've heard of where the perpetrator of a mass killing has survived.

Big Brother oughta know that it was Janet Reno...:lmao::rofl::lol:

Interesting to watch the reactions. The man contacted Anwar al-Awlaki in the Yemen. Not a very nice chap, reponsible for translating many AQ statements into his native tongue of American English. Clearly prided himself as something of a persuader.
So Hasan, worried about his position as a Muslim in the US anti Islam army, contacted Awlaki. Bad move. Bit like opening an emailed file. Whoosh! All the persuasive power he could muster floods into Hasan's metaphorical inbox. No anti-virus programmes to stop it. Hasan didnt know what to do. Beautiful! Easy sell! Hooked with the simplest of baits.
Now, an American citizen, clearly culturally confused, becomes a killer for the Islamists. Its so easy.
Question: If America had been able to offer this man and millions of similarly culturally displaced citizens, a strong cultural connection would he have turned to the enemy?
I guess one of our black posters might have a clue. (sorry, must remember to call them by their euphemism, African Americans) Because from what I can see America has had very little in the way of 'belonging' to any of them. Maybe I'm wrong again.
Funny how its always the damn blacks and foreigners who end up in gaol, isn't it?
