U.S. officials said Monday that improvements ordered by President Joe Biden to strengthen defenses against Chinese espionage helped identify last week’s spy balloon — and determine that similar flights were conducted at multiple points during the Trump administration.

White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said Monday that after Biden took office, the U.S. “enhanced our surveillance of our territorial airspace, we enhanced our capacity to be able to detect things that the Trump administration was unable to detect.”

Speaking at the event hosted by the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition, Sullivan added that as part of those efforts “we were able to go back and look at the historical patterns" and uncover "multiple instances” during the Trump administration in which Chinese surveillance balloons traversed American airspace and territory.

We jammed its communications. It was drifting around, doing nothing until we shot it down over water so as not to kill anyone. The module was the size of 2 busses and after we shot it down, the debris was spread over 7 miles.

Biden took the advice of his military advisors, as he should have.
 
And, inferior and indecisive decision making let it float across the US for over a week before the administration, facing increasing public criticism, finally was forced to act...

You don't know that. In fact, jamming its communications could have disrupted various commercial and private communications in doing so. If it were true, I'd expect ham radio and other such enthusiasts to be telling everyone about it. Jamming of that sort is hard to hide.

Aside from that, if I were the Chinese, I'd have made it's transmissions highly directional and polarized using a very intermittent burst transmission system that sent the signals upward to a satellite. That would have increased the difficulty of jamming exponentially.

Our military's jamming technology is much more sophisticated that either you or I can understand. I'm much more confident with Biden in charge that twump, who trusted Putin more than our own intelligence agencies.

Had Biden shot the balloon down over land, I'm certain you'd be badmouthing him. There is absolutely nothing Biden can do that you will approve of. But twump says something ridiculous like, "a president can declassify anything by thinking about it" or "windmills cause cancer" and he gets a total pass from you.

The means to jam a comm link are well known. There isn't anything truly sophisticated about it. Jamming a signal at 60,000 feet from the ground requires considerable power or the signal will 'burn through' the jamming. If the Chinese chose a frequency to modulate their signal on that was close to various civilian ones, jamming would have been noticeable immediately.

If Biden had shot it down immediately I'd have given him kudos for that. But he didn't. By waiting until it was over the Atlantic has complicated recovery of the wreckage considerably. I've been over the Trump thinking to declassify things bit several times. While technically true, it is really a pretty big fudge to claim that, particularly after the fact. Windmills don't cause cancer either.
