A Russian passenger plane caught fire in Thailand after a top Russian official said

Russian tourists lend a hand by cleaning Koh Samui beach

A group of Russian tourists demonstrated their environmental responsibility this week by lending a hand to clean up a beach on Koh Samui. On the morning of January 31, a group of Russian tourists helped to collect garbage from Baan Mae Nam Beach before enjoying their day swimming, sunbathing, and exercising. The Phuket Express reported the cleanup yesterday.

The tourists found a variety of waste items including plastic bottles, glass bottles, and seaweed. One of the tourists, Mike Michael, spoke to Thai media and expressed his love for Samui Island, which he and his family have been visiting for nine years.

He stated, “Samui local people are very nice and the island is very beautiful,” and added that, “We don’t want to see a dirty beach. It is dangerous for other beachgoers too if they step on glass bottles.”

Russia's airlines and such have always had serious issues. The FAA won't even certify many Russian built aircraft for use in the US due to safety and construction issues.

I don't actually see any mention of Russian built aircraft, doubt that there are very many on international routes now, certainly to hugely busy airports like BKK or HKT.

Go overseas sometime. Russian transport planes are very popular with cargo carriers as the planes are far cheaper than buying US or European made alternatives. You see them all the time. They rarely, if ever, fly into the US however because most aren't FAA certified.

Shit you have the attention span of a goldfish. I've already told you that I live in Thailand! I'm going to Japan soon to see my youngest son in Tokyo and later on my other son in Singapore!!

I was specifically talking about passenger not cargo planes.

The Irkut MC-21 by the sounds of it is a half decent modern plane, albeit it uses a fair bit of foreign technology for the present at least. The Russian government expects that the percentage of domestic components in the MC-21 will be 97% by 2022–2024, making it independent of imported equipment.

So? What's that have to do with Russian aircraft be less reliable?

You told me to go overseas, well I am overseas!! International airlines like Aeroflot have got rid of their Tupolevs in favour of Airbus 320s and Boeing 737 Max. Nobody cares too much about letters and packages dying!

Well for a start the plane in question was a Boeing, so there!!

A Russian tourist plane bound for Moscow faced a terrifying moment when its engine caught fire before takeoff at Phuket International Airport. The 309 passengers and 12 crew on board the 26 year old Boeing 767-306ER, operated by Azur Air, were forced to evacuate the aircraft.

Footage from the scene shows flames bursting from the right engine of the Russian plane before takeoff was stopped.

Passengers reported hearing a loud bang and said the plane was close to taking off at 120 miles per hour when the problem arose.

The incident took place at around 4.30pm on Saturday and resulted in chaotic flight delays that affected as many as 47 flights out of Phuket.

According to the Phuket Info Centre, the fire started in one of the engines, followed by two explosions or at least the sound of two explosions. The Russian pilot quickly activated the fire suppression system, cutting the fuel supply to the engine.
