Why is LSD illegal?

LSD is not brewed.

You are certainly correct, most people had no idea who manufactured it. Where LSD is less of a concern is in the volume taken. Many drugs you used to be worried was laced with other drugs - but LSD is taken in such a micro dose, you did not have to worry about it being laced

This is no longer true with fentanyl, but it used to be the case.

Many people in the grateful dead family did know where it was manufactured though. And still do know.

A typical dosage for an 8 hour trip is around 150-200 micrograms. At one stage much of the world's LSD supply was manufactured in North Wales!

LSD was originally used almost exclusively by the elites in society. Aldous Huxley felt it was too powerful for the masses and best to be kept a secret for the elites. Timothy Leary felt otherwise and wanted it distributed to the masses. They argued about it.

Ken Kesey and his band of merry pranksters, Owsley Stanley (Bear), and so on were the distribution network to move it across the Unites States early on. The Unites States eventually shut down the flow from Europe where it was legally manufactured for some time as you pointed out. They eventually started the manufacturing of it in labs in San Fran and named it "Orange Sunshine"

These "Acid tests" they conducted and documented were them trying to decide who was right - Huxley or Leary.

That lab was operating in the 70s until it was shut down by the police.

Undercover officers spent most of 1976 dressed as hippies watching people and buildings near Llanddewi Brefi and Tregaron, both in Ceredigion and around Carno, in Powys.

In 1977 police raids were executed across Britain, hitting two drugs factories which distributed about 90% of Britain's LSD.

After months of investigating in Wales, England and France, officers found 6.5 million LSD tabs, share certificates and Swiss bank accounts worth millions of pounds.

A total 120 people were arrested and 15 people were sentenced for a total of 120 years.

You must be from Europe? Beginning in the 60's virtually none of the LSD in the Unites States came from overseas. Owsely Stanley was the biggest producer in North America and he shared his craft so even after his arrest it was cheap and plentiful.

His direct connections with the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, and so on is how it was distributed across the country. To this day much of the acid moves across the country via the jamband scene that is still very much alive in the unites states today.

I'm from England, I met Owsley backstage at Bickershaw Festival in 1971, he was very shy and self effacing but incredibly clever, a genius in fact.

I got to hang with Ken Kesey. I was so intimidated, I wish I could have a redo.

I just googled the festival - the Dead played a 5 hour set!!! They were on stuff for sure that day!
