Jefferson was a slave owner when he wrote those words.

He certainly didn't think women should vote, nor that men without property should vote..

I am just saying what the declaration meant from Jefferson's point of view.

We have obviously interpreted the Declaration more broadly in the intervening years since 1776.


That doesn't diminish that what Jefferson wrote at the time was quite radical.
 
If the right to liberty is unalienable, how could we ever put someone in prison?

Like you said earlier

It was inspirational and a higher aim

They were trying very hard to lead the world and it’s inhabitants at the time to a higher state of mankind’s affairs




They tasked us with keeping it alive and PERFECTING our government to aspire and fight for a more perfect union


They were practical men


And left us tools to improve the union


The ability to amend the constitution

That is precisely why Lincoln was opposed to Slavery since since at least the 1830s.

He felt the Declaration's invocation of natural rights meant blacks were entitled to their lives, their liberty, their happiness.

Even if they were not deemed equal to the white man in political rights. Lincoln never thought, until perhaps near the end of his life, that blacks were entitled to the political rights of white men.

They knew they were flawed beings living in a flawed world


They knew to get were mankind really needed to get to change the worlds view of things

It would have to be done in steps throughout mankind’s time on earth


Practical humans with good intents making the progress that was possible at the time under the current conditions
