They always try to stabilize the person before they transport them, but I guess he doesn’t realize these things unless Bret and Heather tell him. ;)

This kind of contact heart trauma is more common in hockey, but although extremely rare, it can happen with any sudden violent contact, even to a very healthy heart.
I think, and I certainly hope, that the kid will be ok upon awakening from the medically induced coma. He's breathing on his own according to what I last heard.

The real tragedy is that the kid could possibly be one of so many that's unlikely to find a comfortable standard of living outside of sports. I hope not.
