Fox News isn't just bad. It's un-American

'The O’Garbage Factor' by Jacob Weisberg

"Rather than in any way maturing, Fox has in recent months become more boisterous and demagogic. Fox sponsored as much as it covered the anti-Obama "tea parties" this summer. Its "fact checking" about the president's health-care proposal is provided by Karl Rove. And weepy Glenn Beck has begun to exhibit a Strangelovean concern about government invading our bloodstream by vaccinating people for swine flu. With this misinformation campaign, Fox stands to become the first network to actively try to kill its viewers.

That Rupert Murdoch may tilt the news rightward more for commercial than ideological reasons is beside the point. What matters is the way that Fox's model has invaded the bloodstream of the American media. By showing that ideologically distorted news can drive ratings, Ailes has provoked his rivals at CNN and MSNBC to develop a variety of populist and ideological takes on the news. In this way, Fox hasn't just corrupted its own coverage. Its example has made all of cable news unpleasant and unreliable."

For 8 long years I listened to supporters of Bush wield the hammer of "un-americanism" like a 4 year old that figured out how to open the family toolbox. I hated it. I heard how you either support the president or you support the terra-ists. How dissent was unpatriotic. Now the left has found the hammer and have decided that what is good for goose is good for the gander. Now opposition and dissent are not patriotic, they are un-american. The accusation is as ugly from the left as from the right. If you don't like Fox news don't watch it. It is going to maintain it's ratings because there are a ton of people out there that agree with its bend and need it to develop their talking points. I don't like Fox news but anyone practicing free speech is by definition, an American.

I always love how they use the editorial shows as evidence that Fox is opinionated...

Um... they are editorial shows.

That being said, I don't watch all that often. It is my opinion that at least half of the people watching Fox News are people who are trying to "catch" O'Reilly uttering an opinion but who conversely fully comprehend that Olbermann is an editorialist.

I guess calling people a racist for speaking out against this administration has run it's course, so now it's onto calling us Un-American...

a real yawner..

Oh no, dear lady. You ARE American.
Extremely American. So bloody American as to make most decent people embarrassed by your existence.

I do not subscribe to this moral relativism that argues that all things are equal, it is a sign today of the flimsy thinking that got in this recent mess.

"Civilization has to be defended against the individual, and its regulations, institutions, and commands are directed to that task." Sigmund Freud

"Civilized society is perpetually menaced with disintegration through this primary hostility of men towards one another." Sigmund Freud

Quite good actually. Still more freedoms than you have. Still more money than you have. Still more Rolls Royces and luxury cars per capita than you have. Still the freest place on earth to set up a business and trade. Still a fraction of violent crime that you have.
All in all, not too bad at all. How are things with you? How many murders in the last couple of weeks? Still can't afford to make your own goods? Still making cars that no one wants? Still bailing out useless companies managed by useless managers most of whom are American republican supporters? Oh dear. How sad.

So much empty rhetoric over nothing. Fox has the right to say what ever they want as long as they are not literally screaming "Fire" in a crowded theater or advocating violence. If you don't like Fox, the best thing you can do is not watch them. I rarely do.

The word "un-American" is even more overused than "Nazi". While it still has some reactive power it is quickly losing it to "cry wolf syndrome"...

There is nothing more American than expressing an opinion.

I think you will find that opinions are expressed all over the world. If the expression of opinions is seen by any as archetypally 'American' it is, I fear, only by Americans. So it doesn't really count.
There is nothing more Bolivian than expressing an opinion. There is nothing more Tongan than expressing an opinion. But then, that's just a non-american opinion.

While they may be expressed all over the world, name one more place where the first Amendment in the Bill of Rights protects them from politically unpopular speech. In China people are imprisoned often for speaking their mind, in the Soviet Union they were, so forth...

I will repeat, there is nothing more American than expressing an opinion. There is a reason so many across the world think Americans are arrogant, it is because they have, and will continue to do so, expressed their negative opinions openly.

Even an opinion as stupid as "so and so" are "un-American" because they tell the truth on whatever Administration they support is "American"...
