Former President Donald Trump attacked President Joe Biden for failing to secure the release of former Marine Paul Whelan in Thursday's prisoner swap with Russia, even though Trump was sitting in the White House for half of the time that Whelan has been imprisoned overseas.

But Trump never succeeded in bringing him home, even as other U.S. citizens detained in other countries, like Pastor Andrew Brunson in Turkey and rapper A$AP Rocky in Sweden, were released thanks to Trump.

Speaking to the Atlantic in 2019, prominent Kremlin critic Bill Browder said "Trump could easily make the call" to secure Whelan's release.

"At this point, I think it requires the Whelan family going on Fox News and telling their story so he can hear it himself. Because the normal channels of briefing won't work," Browder said at the time.

While I do think the US Government should help any American passport holder with things like legal representation... We should restrict the extreme trade threats for cases where an American was targeted for being an American; the unfair situations.

A$AP was more violent than Swedes allow. He stood his ground when insulted, and used an improvised weapon, when Sweden has a strict obligation to retreat. This was not an unreasonable, or unfair situation, and trump went overboard by threatening billions in trade restrictions over an arrest in a street brawl.

Paul Whelan was arrested & jailed in Russia in December, 2018. The single best excuse I got today from a Trump supporter for why Trump didn’t bring Whelan home: “Trump wasn’t President in 2018.”

Yeah except for one thing, Whelan is most likely a spy. The rules are different for spies.

This was actually the second prisoner release Joe has negotiated. The first was Trevor Reed, a marine. twump never gave a shit about any of them. twump can go party with Nazis and fuck himself.

Thats small in comparison of trump freeing 5000 Taliban and doing absolutely nothing to release a hostage in Russia.
In fact, in four year Trump never once mentioned the name of Whelan.
