If Trump forms his own party, he could win enough redneck states to cause the electoral college to not have 50% of the votes plus 1 for any candidate.
That would move the decision to the House of Representatives.
Here's the part about which I'm not sure.
If the lame duck House gets to make the decision, then they would choose whomever the republican nominee happened to be. The republicans have the House right now.
If the new House gets to make the decision, then whoever wins the House in 2024 will decide.
Trump would not win in either case, but he could take the decision away from the electoral college and give it to the House.
Somebody may have already posted this, but I can't see all of the posts due to my ignore list.

We should end the party primary system and let the parties choose their own candidates at their conventions. Party activists, not the public at large, should choose party nominees.
THEN we should run a non-partisan single national primary for all of candidates and put the top two names, and ONLY the top two names regardless of party affiliation if any, on the general election ballot.
Then the general election would always choose a winner from among the two most preferred candidates and agitators just looking to fuck things up would be neutralized.
