Real polls did not show a red wave. They were fairly accurate showing the results including all those races that have been too close to call.

There is another very good explanation. The public does not want a party in power that lies about election fraud, attacks the Capitol, and tries to block the electoral vote count. Then, the supporters of that party defended the riot. No president has ever attempted such an action.
