Is Bill Maher right about the end of democracy?

He has said that democracy is on the ballot next week - and that it will lose.

He makes a persuasive case, and lest anyone think it's hyperbole, you really just have to look at history to see how authoritarian regimes took power. In Maher's estimation, the GOP will take over Congress, and impeach Biden for everything until he's a complete lame duck. Even if he can beat the Trump/Lake ticket at that point, it won't matter. Trump will do the same thing that he did in '20, but this time, with an "army of election deniers" who are about to win next week & who will do for Trump what he couldn't get done last time. They'll "find" votes, and do all of his other bidding to effectively overturn the will of the voters.

He cited the WI GOP governor candidate, who forgot his poker face & said Republicans will never lose another election if he wins.

He paints a pretty bleak picture beyond that. Freedom of religion, other parts of the Bills of Rights, free & fair elections - we'll look back on all of those with nostalgia.

And again: this has happened before in history, and it hasn't been that rare. You don't know what you've got, 'til it's gone.

It does seem like a hyperbole, but with what we've seen since 2016, it seems to become a reality.

If they impeach Biden, Harris and Pelosi, it's game over.

Maher's argument, not mine - though I agree w/ some of his premise.

And he's definitely right on that. Neither party is interested in being better. They just want payback - both of them, all the time.
right about what? i doubt impeachment, although Dems would probably do it again
They want to pack the courts and federalilize elections . among other assaults on institutions

No. I think he's overthinking it and underestimating a nation with more guns than people. Sure, some people are going to die because of all the political rhetoric but, in the end, all the right people will be killed and peace will return to the land.

Americans still believe in justice and fair play even when they're worried about their families.

I'd qualify it right now as my worst fear - but unlikely.

Not impossible - but unlikely.

The future is always a little scary, which is why those with faith, be it God, people or their nation, find it easier to weather.

Still, I recommend a good scoped rifle with a common ammunition round like a 7.62mm and becoming proficient with it.

Look at the Ukrainians for a modern example of how to fight tyranny.

The Russians should assassinate Putin. Either a bullet to the head or throw his crazy ass out of a 10th floor window.

A main reason why the Republicans are ahead is not because of Republicans, but because of Independents.

When neither party represents the majority of Americans, then the best strategy is to vote against the incumbents. This time the Republicans will win. Does anyone here really believe that the Republicans are going to wave a wand and make things better? No, me neither. It'll be more of the same bullshit if not worse.

Next time it will be the Democrats who win. Look at the pattern for the past 30 years for guidance. Look at how narrow the margins for victory are and how narrow the control is by the dominant party.

Bill is throwing some red meat to his erstwhile supporters, I doubt that he seriously believes that.

You can whine all you like, Tom, but you're a chickenshit Brit living in a Third World Shithole. No one takes you or the Russian seriously.

Bill Maher is getting wackier with age. Some of his conspiracy theory bullshit is as fucked up as your nonsense. If you watched the show, Fareed Zakaria and Maggie Haberman were trying to be nice but were giving Bill some odd glances...just like I give you and Dookie. LOL

To be fair, he knows he's at the end of the road. So why not go out with a bang?

Bill Maher is an opportunists. He will suck anyones dick for ratings. For the love of god use your natural god given natural instincts.

He does seem to be fading, but he also seemed to be a little too enamored with the smell of his own ass.

I used to like him, but he's changed for the worse over the years. His show Politically Incorrect on Comedy Central was edgy, funny and rang true. He changed a bit when he went to ABC(?) probably because the network made him. He changed for the worse when they fired him for his accurate comment that it takes more guts to fly into a building than pushing a button launching a missile. He seemed to have recouped himself when he got on HBO but did seem to get a bit wackier as time passed.

I'd dropped HBO about 5 years or more ago and only recently began watching it again (his last two shows). While he's still funny (kudos to the writers), when he injects his personal views, he's not very funny....and I'm not referencing his "the end is near" spiel should the Republicans win the election. His general tone seems to have gone further down the path of irrationality. He also looked a lot older this time around. LOL

that would seem to suggest that he knows that the donkeys are busy "fixing" these elections again.

if he's right then yes its history.

Just to be "that guy"; Maher needs to remember that he was AGAINST bringing back the "Fairness Doctrine". One has to wonder how things would be today if Reagan hadn't killed it.
