Gun-toting soccer mom, husband shot

You'd like to visit one of the JRs three locations in North Carolina. http://www.jrcigars.com/

Their stores are about the size of a Walmart, and most of what they sell is the cheapest crap imaginable, but in one corner they have about a 3000 square foot climate controlled room stocked with hundreds of cigar brands. It's dimly lit with a fog of smoke and water misters. In the center they have a rectangular, glass-top counter staffed typically by three women, usually middle aged and average appearance, and at least one at all times is smoking a cigar. Each brand has a display and you can buy individuals from the case, or turn around to the perimeter and grab a box. You can sit in one of the easy chairs, smoke a cigar and hang out with the wood Indian.

Tried that once and it felt...useless. A vote for the L is a protest vote. I guess the only thing it gives you is peace of mind that you didn't vote for any of the idiots in office.

Slow and steady my friend. At the presidential level you would be correct. But at the local level is where the vote counts the most and libertarians are most likely to be effective right now. Remember that with determination and patience, even water can wear stone.

Snapshot: How Gun Violence Affects Your World

Manufacturing

Every 8 seconds, a new firearm is made in America. (ATF, "Commerce in Firearms in the US", 2000 Report)

Over a twenty-five year period, from 1972 to 1997, over 59 million handguns were manufactured in the U.S.

The top 5 gun manufacturing states during that time:

1)Connecticut - 25,472,564
2) Massachusetts - 18,360,915
3) New York - 7,119,769
4) California - 6,337,544
5) Florida - 2,334,206

According to a data analysis by the Violence Prevention Center, just 3 states (top 3 listed above) accounted for 75 percent of all the domestic firearms manufactured in America during that 25 year period of time. Also, the VPC notes that states with rigid gun control laws such as Massachusetts, California, and New York, were actually the leading makers of firearms. ((Violence Policy Center, "Firearms Production in America 1972 - 1997, A State by State Breakdown", 2000)

Did You Know?

Every hour in America, four people are killed by firearms. (Centers for Disease Control)

A gun in your home makes it three times more likely that you or someone you care about will be murdered by a family member or intimate partner (Kellerman,New England Journal of Medicine v329, n.15 1993)

Gun violence is the second-leading cause of injury-related fatalities in the US after car accidents. In Alaska, Maryland and Nevada as well as D.C., firearm death rates in 1998 exceeded those for car accidents. (CDC & Natnl. Vital Statistics Report, 1999)

One million Americans have died in firearm homicides, suicides, and unintentional shootings since 1962. (Fatal Firearm Injuries in the United States 1962-1994. Violence Surveillance Summary Series, No. 3, 1997; Deaths: Final Data for 1995- 1997, National Vital Statistics Report)

Contrary to popular opinion, gun violence isn't endemic only to certain cities or neighborhoods - it can happen anywhere. Take a look at the statistics below:

Homicides in the Bay Area (for 1999)
According to the California Department of Justice (by county)

Alameda: 85

Contra Costa: 57

Marin: 2

San Francisco: 64

Santa Clara: 37

San Mateo: 18

TOTAL: 263
Of these 263 homicides, approximately 200, or about 76 percent, were due to guns.

In 1998, California ranked highest amongst all fifty states for gun-related homicides (1573) and gun-related suicides (1702) (Centers for Disease Control, 1998 mortality findings)

In 1998, 499 children from ages 0-19 died in CA due to firearms. Nationally during the same year, 3792 children from ages 0-19 were killed in the US due to firearms. (CA Dept. of Health)

Violence In And Out Of The Classroom

In 1997, In California, there were a total of 594 firearm-related deaths for kids ages 0 - 19. Of these deaths, 106 were suicides, 457 were homicides, 26 were accidents and 5 were ones with unknown intent. (CA Dept. of Health)

In 1998-99, states and territories expelled 3,523 students from bringing a firearm to school, down from 5,724 in 1996-97. (US Dept. of Ed., 2000 Press Release)

Women And Gun Violence

In 1997, homicide was the second leading cause of death amongst young women from 15 to 24. Suicide was the fourth leading cause of death for this same age group. 56 percent of these deaths were caused by firearms. (National Vital Statistics Report, 1999)

In 1998, for every one time a woman used a handgun to kill a stranger in self-defense, 302 women were murdered in handgun homicides (FBI's Supplementary Homicide Report, 1998)

Suicide

The largest category of firearms fatality is suicide, not homicide. In 1997, 54 percent of all gun deaths were suicides, and 42 percent were homicides (National Vital Statistics Report, 1999)

In a household with a gun, a person is almost five times more likely to die by suicide than people living in a gun-free home. (New England Journal of Medicine, v327, n.7, 1992)

NOTE: PLEASE give them more guns

The Self-Defense Myth

In 1997, for every time that a civilian used a handgun to kill in self-defense, 43 people lost their lives in handgun homicides. (FBI Supplementary Homicide Report data, 1997)

In 1997 there were 15,690 homicides, of which 8,503 were committed with handguns. Only 193 (2.3 percent) handgun homicides were classified as justifiable homicides. (FBI Supplementary Homicide Report data, 1997)

I went to a JR's in St. Louis in 1998. They had a really good selection, and I have to admit that I have, on occassion smoked one of JR's brands and that some of them are pretty damn good. Mostly I smoke Rocky Patel Edge Maduros, Camacho Corojo Maduros, Oliva Serie G, O and V, and Illusione MJ 12's. Can't smoke indoors in much of anywhere in NM, except cigar shops, and cigar bars. Getting to be that enjoyment of anykind is just down right criminal. I think this weekend I will go to the range and shoot while I smoke cigars. That should cause people some pain.

Self Defense does not always involve firing your weapon. In 1988 a man tried to take my ex-wife out of our vehicle at a convenience store. I put my .357 in his face and he backed away and was later arrested. Without my gun who knows how far that would have gone. In hindsight, I should have unbuckled her seatbelt for him.

How ironic, and hypocritical. :)

How COMMON it is of you to speak of men raping men and the size of other men's dicks.

When looking for a hypothetical of a crime .. someone sticking a dick up another mans ass is the first thing that comes to your homosexual mind.

I have no problem with homosexuals .. just the racist ones who claim to hate gays.

There is a name for your particular dementia.

In agree that self-defense doesn't always mean shooting someone .. and I applaud your move to save your wife from harm .. but gun violence is what it is my brother.

I most certainly wouldn't question any means whatsoever that you took to protect yourself and your wife and that's not what I'm doing. I'm presenting statistics that clearly demonstrate how detrimental guns are to the greater society.

I've lived in urban enviroments all my life .. by choice .. and I've never had any reason to own or grab a gun .. which is not to suggest I haven't faced threatening situations .. but that there are other ways to deal with them besides grabbing a gun.

I think those who own guns should have MORE of them .. of course that also guarantees that criminals will have MORE of them when they break into gun-owners homes.

The solution to gun-violence in America is of course .. more guns.

Since you are throwing around statistics. This is from the USDOJ/BOJ website:

Firearm-related crime has plummeted since 1993, then slightly increased in 2005.
firearmnonfatalno.gif

Nonfatal firearm crime rates have declined since 1994, before increasing in 2005.
http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/glance/firearmnonfatalrt.gif

After 1996, less than 10% of nonfatal violent crimes involved firearms.
http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/glance/percentfirearm.gif

Offenders

According to the 1997 Survey of State Prison Inmates, among those possessing a gun, the source of the gun was from -

a flea market or gun show for fewer than 2%
a retail store or pawnshop for about 12%
family, friends, a street buy, or an illegal source for 80%

BOJ stats for 1992 indicated that 62,000 people used weapons in self defense and most never fired their weapons. In your world, you would have 62,000 more victims. I don't like that world. I believe that you and I have a right to defend ourselves and our families, with deadly force if necessary. You believe that You and I and our families should be victims and hope the police arrive before we are robbed, our daughters raped, and our families harmed. I like my world better.

I bought one of their variety packs and it sucked. I prefer an Onyx or Arturo Fuente; either in a maduro. I let my range membership lapse since I have a place in the mountains where I can shoot outside under the deck while drinking cold beer, smoke cigars and piss in the woods without bothering the neighbors. :pke:

I don't ignore that racist piece of shit. I have much more fun outting him and demonstrating his ignorance. :0)

I can deal with hard core righties that have some reasoning.
freak, damo, cawaky, etc.

asstool, southernracist, and his mom meme are on my ignore.
I leave em for a couple months, remove them when I need to laugh. When I think we're dumber than a third world country I put them back on ignore.
