Zero hedge is trash

The article points out that the American personnel are monitoring the usage of US-supplied weapons and systems. They aren't engaged in combat.

Remember when the Russian-backed Separatists shot down MH17? They used a high-tech, highly sophisticated Buk 9M83 surface-to-air missile system. That's not something that can be learned watching a Youtube video. There was a Russian technical advisor there in a training capacity, not a chain of command or combat capacity.

It's actually a common practice for nations selling advanced weapons systems to foreigners.

But on Thursday Wilbert Paulissen, a Dutch official from the Joint Investigation Team (JIT), told reporters: "All the vehicles in a convoy carrying the missile were part of the Russian armed forces."

He restated the JIT's conclusion that the plane had been destroyed by a Russian-made Buk missile, adding that it had been supplied by the country's 53rd anti-aircraft brigade in Kursk.

"Helping to ensure Ukraine maintains control of its territory is a primary means to limit potential illicit diversion of weapons by Russia’s forces, Russia’s proxies, and non-state actors," the State Dept. said, explaining the difficulty of close tracking due to the lack of US troop presence on the ground.

This new arms accountability plan will focus on three areas, according to a comprehensive document:

  • Bolstering the ability of security forces in Ukraine and its neighboring states to account for and safeguard their arms and ammunition during transfer, in storage, and when deployed;
  • Strengthening border management and security in Ukraine and its neighboring states; and
  • Building the capacity of security forces, law enforcement officials, and border control agencies in Ukraine and its neighboring states to deter, detect, and interdict illicit trafficking of certain advanced conventional weapons.

"U.S. military personnel are now on the ground in Ukraine, keeping track of and inspecting weapons the U.S. has shipped to Ukrainian forces"

The Americans in the Ukraine are not there in a combat role; so much for hyping-up the story.

US troops have always been in Ukraine -- it's Russia's front door. But mostly it's private contractors like Blackwater.

It doesn't fucking matter what they're doing in Ukraine, they are in Ukraine. They are subject to attack, being killed or captured, even if it is unlikely that happens. It heightens the risk of open war between the US and Russia.

It's no different than the presence of the USS Panay in China in the 1930's where it was bombed and sunk by the Japanese. Same thing. Presence heightens risk of direct conflict.

First of all, so what? The Trumpanzee SCOTUS has turned our nation into such a deplorable shithole that nobody's life is worth shit anymore anyway.

No better example than Herr Gardner himself.

And second, having troops in Ukraine makes a hell of a lot more sense than hauling my ass off to Vietnam ever did over a half century ago.
Same thing with wasting time, money, and lives in the wastelands of the Middle East.

Europe is actually a civilized continent worth trying to save.

This isn't about FUCKING TRUMP! It's about the current administration putting US troops physically in a war zone in Ukraine. It doesn't matter that they are in a "rear area." It matters they could become targets for Russian attack.

Actually, Vietnam made more sense than massively aiding Ukraine does.

Obama's proxy war with Putin had US troops in Ukraine as far back as 2012.

And, that's bad for the US. Ukraine isn't worth the massive effort we're shoving into it.

Assume Ukraine wins this war. How does that change US foreign policy or trade?

Assume Ukraine loses this war. How does that change US foreign policy or trade?

The answers are very similar, if not the same.
