In rare move, U.S. offers aid to Cuba to help in Hurricane Ian recovery efforts

The Biden administration offered Cuba $2 million in funding for emergency relief to help with the aftermath of Hurricane Ian, the State Department announced Tuesday.

Cuba’s Foreign Minister Burno Rodriguez responded on Twitter.

“We appreciate humanitarian assistance offer made by the U.S.,” he wrote. “This material contribution that is worth 2 million USD, channeled through the International Federation of Red Cross, will add up to our recovery efforts in support of the victims of the ravages caused by #HurricaneIan.”

The U.S. has offered Cuba aid in the past, which has been declined. In 2008, George Bush offered Cuba up to $5 million after two powerful hurricanes. Cuba's leader Fidel Castro at the time, rejected the offer .

The money is for the victims and to help rebuild.

Cuba has a huge pile of US money sitting in a safe at their capitol because Castro never cashed the decades of checks we paid him for the lease on GITMO. Let the Cuban government cash those if they need money.

Cuba has been rejecting the offers. :dunno:

Why not? If your neighbor was in need, would you not help them out?

Oh wait. You're on the wrong side. Of course you wouldn't.

Depends on what they need and if I can. If I knew my neighbor had hundreds of uncashed checks in a safe that could easily cover his repair bills but was unwilling to cash them because he didn't like the person that wrote them in payment, no, I wouldn't help.

Help starts with you helping yourself. Helping others comes next.

Who is the "neighbor" in Cuba?
