BRUSSELS, Sept 27 (Reuters) - European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen on Tuesday said the leaks of the Nord Stream pipelines were caused by sabotage, and warned of the "strongest possible response" should active European energy infrastructure be attacked.

"Spoke to (Danish Prime Minister Mette) Frederiksen on the sabotage action Nordstream," von der Leyen said on Twitter, adding it was paramount now to investigate the incidents to get full clarity on the "events and why."

"Any deliberate disruption of active European energy infrastructure is unacceptable and will lead to the strongest possible response," she warned.

Nord Stream leak is in 'diveable' zone and Russia has underwater drones, says expert

Sweden has begun a preliminary investigation into potential sabotage of the Nord Stream infrastructure.
The location of the Nord Stream leak is “diveable”, according to an expert, who also highlighted that Russia has underwater drones. Russia and European nations spent billions of dollars constructing the pipelines.

Moscow is still earning from the infrastructure, and is likely hoping to increase profits when its “special military operation” in Ukraine comes to an end.

But a Ukrainian official, quoted by Reuters, has called the incident a Russian attack to destabilise Europe, without elaborating or supplying proof.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki also said: “We see clearly it's an act of sabotage, related to the next step of escalation of the situation in Ukraine.”

Russia has itself claimed sabotage remains a possibility, accepting the likelihood of disruption in Europe.

It could be that Russia is using this for political cover, ... as an "excuse" not to reopen the lines.

Highly unlikely.....much more likely this is America thinking that they are supporting Ukraine by doing what Ukraine wants and also thinking that they are destroying a Russian asset, not caring that a Europe that cant get energy dies.

I don't think Ukraine would undermine and sabotage its NATO allies.

There's going to be lots of theories, ... and we'll never know the real truth.
 
Didn't Russia just shut the Nord Stream down? If they didn't plan to sell Europe gas out of it perhaps they damaged a repairable area so they could blame Ukraine. That way Europe would be pissed at Ukraine.
 
The real question is Who carried out the attack? It had to be a government entity almost certainly. Nobody else could have found the pipeline on the bottom of the sea, planted charges so precisely, then broken the pipeline.

To do this undetected means the perp had access to a modern submarine, modern ROV underwater vessels, and powerful explosive charges. That pretty much rules out Ukraine. So, who did this?

If they used a surface ship to get there then perhaps we will see them. But agree if Russia is the investigator Ukraine will get the blame no matter who did it.

they've been fine using phoney balony excuses so far. the last thing they need to do is something that costs real money to fix AND leak fuel that cannot be recaptured.

Tucker made an argument for the US being a suspect. It would have been easy peasy for the seals to do it. I'm skeptical however. I personally think it's a false flag attack. Putin rose to power using a false flag attack.
