‘A Crisis Coming’: The Twin Threats to American Democracy

The violent Jan. 6, 2021, attack on Congress, meant to prevent the certification of President Biden’s election, was the clearest manifestation of this movement, but it has continued since then. Hundreds of elected Republican officials around the country falsely claim that the 2020 election was rigged. Some of them are running for statewide offices that would oversee future elections, potentially putting them in position to overturn an election in 2024 or beyond.

“There is the possibility, for the first time in American history, that a legitimately elected president will not be able to take office,” said Yascha Mounk, a political scientist at Johns Hopkins University who studies democracy.

When does it start?

Sounds like racist white libs are looking for an excuse to declare martial law and implement a socialist dictatorship.

Imposing martial law actually was discussed among Republicans after the 2020 election.

It seems odd that people marginalize what happened after that election, and on 1/6. The party in power at that time wanted to overturn a legitimate election and ignore the will of the people.

Hmmm ... it was White Libs that wanted Pres. Trump to assume dictatorial powers and declare a national lockdown, mask and distancing mandates.

Because of covid and gov't interference in the election, we know it was the weirdest, most insecure election ever.

Said alleged discussion was never serious. :palm:

The first problem with this thread is that none of the people here who should read it will even open the link, though any non subscriber can open it if he hasn't used up the free access. Second problem is a Trumper who hypothetically did read it would reject the author's conclusion that democracy being under threat in this country is a bad thing. You would hear again the dimwitted, "Oh, we are a republic not a democracy, didn't you know that?". For others though, this is a lucid account of where we are in light of where we were not so long ago.

The "we're not a democracy" argument that has cropped up over the past few years is the most telling, imo. You never would have heard Republicans argue that 20 years ago, and certainly not during the Reagan era.

And for the record - we are a representative democracy.

For the record, no nation has every aspired to be a pure democracy. It's a fake issue.

It was closer than we’d like to think last time.

Conservatives have a very hard time addressing this topic with valid counter-arguments. They usually just try to marginalize and dismiss what happened. Whataboutism is also popular, though literally nothing else in modern American history compares.

We do not recognize the results of your unconstitutional show elections.

The twin threats are this President and the Democratic Party of Lying Jackasses. The media is complicit as well by being the propaganda arm of the DNC. :palm:
