What do you think about Trump comments saying he'd pardon J6 insurrectionists?

Joe Capitalist

Racism is a disease
Former President Trump’s promise to grant pardons to the rioters who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, is running into strong opposition from Senate Republicans.
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), one of Trump’s closest allies, told The Hill that granting pardons to Jan. 6 protesters is “a bad idea.”
“Pardons are given to people who admit misconduct, rehabilitate themselves. They’re not supposed to be used for other purposes,” he said.
Other Republican senators are joining Graham in criticizing Trump’s promise to pardon the Jan. 6 protesters as inappropriate.
“I don’t think potential candidates should hold pardons out as a promise,” said Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.), who is usually a reliable Trump ally. “It’s somewhat problematic for me on a moral level and an ethical level — sort of like promising other giveaways to particular individuals.
“I prefer avoiding those kinds of things,” he said.
Sen. Mike Rounds (R-S.D.) said he wouldn’t support granting pardons to people convicted of crimes because of their actions on Jan. 6.
“If he were elected, he would have a constitutional ability to do it,” he said of Trump’s promise of pardons. “I would disagree with it. I think there was insurrection and I think these folks need to be punished.
“I was there. This was truly violent. People were injured, people were killed. I have very little mercy for the individuals that were involved in that activity that day,” Rounds added.
Senate Republican Whip John Thune (S.D.) said people who committed crimes on Jan. 6 must face the consequences of their actions.
“The only people that get pardoned are people who are charged with crimes. If they were charged with crimes, they ought to be prosecuted like everybody else,” he said. “The rule of law applies. If people broke laws, they need to be held accountable.”
Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah), who voted last year to impeach Trump on the charge of inciting an insurrection on Jan. 6, said pardoning people who invaded the Capitol to stop Biden’s election would be wrong.
“The Jan. 6 riot was an attack on the temple of democracy, and the people who violated the law, attacked our law enforcement and besmirched our nation’s Capitol should be prosecuted according to the law, and certainly should not be pardoned,” he said. “It’s a grossly inappropriate comment to make.”

This is the challenge I have with politicians: how do you know when they're pandering (or in Trump's case, likely grifting) or are being truthful? Politicians will say/not say things for self-preservation. How many Republican politicians are scared to publicly acknowledge that the election was not stolen out of fear of losing their jobs when Trump supporters turn against them? I suspect it's many.

If Trump were to win a second term, and have literally nothing left to play for, I don't doubt that he would pardon some number of the J6 rioters if, for no other reason, than they've shown their loyalty to him. Trump loves loyalty.

They should really remove the Pardon power from the President. Trump has shown that it could be used maliciously. Look at all his minions who pledged to do his bidding that came to him begging for a pardon. Even his fucking lawyer said “I’ve decided that I should be on the pardon list if that is still in the works.”
You shouldn't have people who work for the president asking for pardons. It just encourages corrupt behavior in the White House. it's a bad precedent. Either remove the Pardon power from the president or modify it so that the president can't use it to further his own gains.

Pardons are fine

We just need to keep a criminal out of the presidency

And not let a party cheat in elections like republicans have done for decades

In the USA court system there is full documentation of Republican Party cheating in elections

Adjudicated by judges repeatedly over decades

Cold hard evidence they cheated Americans out of their rights to vote so they can win elections

There is NO LIKE RECORD for the Democratic Party

Facts are better than lies you shit bag

Thirty-five years after it was first imposed, a judge has lifted a consent decree barring the Republican National Committee from pursuing “ballot security” measures.

In their 1981 lawsuit to stop the RNC from engaging in certain practices at the polls, the Democratic National Committee attested that in a New Jersey gubernatorial election, the RNC had sent sample ballots to communities of color, and then had the names for each ballot returned as undeliverable removed from voter rolls. Democrats also alleged that the RNC hired off-duty cops to patrol majority-minority precincts, wearing “National Ballot Security Task Force” armbands. These details were enough to secure a consent decree between the two party organizations and the court in 1982, stopping the GOP from engaging in such voter-intimidation practices.

Why were they on it for 35years?

Because they kept being caught cheating in elections

Once Roberts was placed on the court they worked to dismantle this consent decree

Roberts ended it by saying because the nation elected a black man that meant the republicans would never cheat black peoples again

Boy was that proven to be an idiot idea

It's just his transactional/mob behavior. "You do me a favah I do yoo a favah".

He was dead wrong

They have been proven to still be cheating black voters to steal elections

There is no record of the Democratic party cheating in elections

Republicans just lie about it and never present viable evidence to back their lies

And governors, I agree. There should be a commission to decide pardons.. the president can appoint them, and they can review questionable cases while the president butts out.. One man should not be able to provide unequal justice just because, "he knows the president".

It's abuse, nothing else.

If we get the criminals out of the system it works just fine

The Republican Party has been soft pedaled for their crimes against our system

Time to crack down on their criminal behavior
