I am annoyed by people who had desk jobs in the military, but strut around and expect to be honored for heroism.
My brother sat at a desk for the Air Force and he never expected anyone to pat him on the back for his 'sacrifice'
They annoy many in the military too as shown by the Navy pilot Twitter posts. LOL
Real heroes take risks because it's the right thing to do. Your brother did make sacrifices. True, flying a desk is safer than flying a military aircraft*, but, as with DeSantis, it's often done in far from home and, sometimes, in risky circumstances.
A lot of my friends died in peacetime Marine Corps helicopter accidents**. It goes with the job. There were desk jockeys and mechanics in the back of some of those helicopters, just like Kobe and his kid (and the 7 others who died).
Notice that about 20-25% of the deaths in Iraq were due to "non-hostile" causes: https://www.defense.gov/casualty.pdf
That said, while I believe all military personnel make sacrifices for their country and are involved in risky operations, you are 100% correct that claiming something they didn't earn is wrong.
*Military aircraft: built by the lowest bidder, maintained by 18-19 year olds often in hostile environments.
**Mostly CFIT like Kobe Bryant's accident.
