Trump ally Perry sues to block U.S. from searching seized cellphone

WASHINGTON, Aug 24 (Reuters) - Republican U.S. congressman Scott Perry of Pennsylvania, an ally of former President Donald Trump, has sued the Justice Department in a bid to stop investigators from searching the contents of his cellphone after it was seized this month.

Perry, who has helped spread Trump's false claims that the 2020 election was stolen from him through widespread voting fraud, was vacationing with his family in New Jersey on Aug. 9 when three FBI agents approached him with a search warrant to seize his cellphone.

Suspicion of criminal activity, probable cause. The FBI learned enough to move forward with this search. Then again, if you have nothing to hide, it should be no big deal.

Then that should be in the warrant as to probable cause. As for the "nothing to hide" bullshit, that's just kafkatrapping on your part.

Remember the three amigos which included Perry, Sondland, and Volker who tried pushing Ukraine to announce the investigations Trump wanted. In return, the White House would release $400 million in military aid to the Ukraine.

The congressman was in contact with Trump White House officials in the weeks before the Capitol attack in which rioters sought to prevent Congress from certifying the election results. During a select committee hearing in June, lawmakers heard witness testimony that Perry sought a pardon from Trump before he left office.

The U.S. Attorney's Office in Washington is investigating a failed bid by Trump allies to submit phony slates of electors - people chosen to formally cast a state's electoral votes in the U.S. Electoral College system - to the National Archives in a scheme to overturn his election loss.

The seizure of Perry's cellphone came after federal agents executed similar search warrants on former top Justice Department official Jeffrey Clark as well as John Eastman, an attorney who wrote a memo outlining a proposal he said could be used by then-Vice President Mike Pence to thwart the congressional election certification.

Perry was given the search warrant when they took his phone. He is free to release that search warrant to the public any time he wants to. The search warrant will list the possible crimes that are the basis for the warrant. Perhaps he does have something to hide which is why he hasn't released the search warrant.

Actually, Perry has stated that he isn't the target of a criminal investigation and the FBI has returned his phone. Seems there was no need for 3 agents and a warrant other than to intimidate a political opponent of the Democrats...

So? Given that the FBI lied repeatedly using the Steele Dossier to spy on Trump, got a Trump hating judge to sign off on the Mar a Lago warrant, ran a complete scam to implicate four men in an FBI concocted plot to assassinate Whitmer, etc., I have ZERO faith that the warrant was valid. This is the sort of politicized shit that J Edgar Hoover pulled and should never be happening now.
