Thank you.
1) 'favored nation status' has nothing to do with anything but trade.
MFN does not even mention human rights.
And nor should it.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Most_favoured_nation
As Ron Paul rightly says (paraphrased), cutting off trade with 'naughty' countries does nothing to stop them being 'naughty'.
Look at Russia?
They were cut off.
Didn't stop them in the slightest from continuing to invade Ukraine.
US embargoed Cuba to try and stop them being communist roughly 60 years ago.
That failed TOTALLY.
Trade and human rights should NEVER be mixed.
The more a country depends on trade?
The less likely they will be to end that trade they depend on by acting lousy.
The main reason China has not invaded Taiwan now is probably because to embargo them would hurt their economy too much.
Because they are now strong enough militarily to do it.
Trade has saved Taiwan's butts (for now).
Trade and military's should never be mixed.
America should either attack Russia IN Ukraine directly or stay the fuck out of it completely - including embargoes and giving Ukraine GINORMOUS stuff at taxpayer's expense
(I would choose the latter myself - it's none of our business. Their mess is not worth dying for).
2) who ever said you need to be dependent on other countries?
No one I can remember.
Free trade is great.
It allows consumers to benefit from lower prices all over the globe.
And raises the general standard of living - especially amongst the lower classes.
Now, I am against letting China get away with copyright infringements.
And I would have taken them to task MUCH harder on the Uyghur genocide AND the Spratly's they have stolen (against international law) AND causing Covid and letting it spread.
But I would have threatened military responses - a military run embargo.
How?
I would have taken back the Spratly's - by force if necessary - and given them back to their rightful owners.
And demanded a trillion or two dollars in compensation for Covid PLUS demanded free, UN access to examine the Uyghur genocide.
If China failed to accommodate us?
I would threaten China with a naval blockade if they failed on either.
But there is a big difference between restricting trade/tariffs and a naval blockade.
One is for wusses.
And does little.
As history has shown.
The other is military and risks war.
Which is fine by me.
America is going to have to fight China one day - eventually (probably).
Better to do it now (or at least use our superiority to force them to back off), whilst we are still stronger than they are.
Rather than wait a few generations when we no longer are.
And Obama, Trump and Biden have let China push their weight around FAR too much in the last 10+ years or so.
And forget Trump's tariffs.
They did nothing to even slow down China.
It must stop.
America MUST stand up to China militarily - whilst we still can.
We must force them to act decently with the threat of war.
