Here's a bit of history that you apparently weren't taught in high school.

The slave trade was abolished by Act of Parliament in 1807. After that, the major if not the only force suppressing the transatlantic slave trade was the Royal Navy.

Slavery was abolished throughout the British Empire in 1833-34. This was under a reformist Whig administration - the nearest thing the British parliament had to a left wing.

The slave owners were compensated. It cost a lot of money.
