WASHINGTON, Aug 9 (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden on Tuesday signed documents endorsing Finland and Sweden's accession to NATO, the most significant expansion of the military alliance since the 1990s as it responds to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Biden signed the U.S. "instrument of ratification" welcoming the two countries, the final step for their endorsement by the United States.

"It was and is a watershed moment I believe in the alliance and for the greater security and stability not only of Europe and the United States but of the world," he said of their entry into the post World War Two alliance.

The U.S. Senate backed the expansion by an overwhelming 95-1 last week, a rare display of bipartisan unity in a bitterly divided Washington. Both Democratic and Republican Senators strongly approved membership for the two Nordic countries, describing them as important allies whose modern militaries already worked closely with NATO. read more

The vote was a sharp contrast with some rhetoric in Washington during the administration of former Republican President Donald Trump, who pursued an "America First" foreign policy and criticized NATO allies who failed to reach defense spending targets.

The Russians have lost between a fifth and a third of their tanks. It is worse among their best tank units, where they lost about half of their tanks. And that is up against Ukrainian troops (well motivated, but not with the absolute best weapons). The Russian Army has got to be thinking that the rest of the tanks might be completely worthless in a war against NATO.

Russian military logistics has proven incompetent. They can move ammo to the frontlines, as long as no one is fighting them. The problem is that in war, their enemy is fighting them. This was not obvious in training exercises, where no one was fighting them.

I still think Russian take on Blitzkrieg, Deep Operation, is very good... But Russians have proven to have no idea how to implement it. They have no ability to improvise, and junior officers know nothing about tactics or strategy. They do not have what we would call mission command.

All in all, aside from the nuclear weapons, Russia is a military joke right now. NATO does not want any war with anyone, but Russia is looking less formidable than a year ago.

You are correct Trump would not have signed Sweden and Finland into NATO. Only because Putin would have never attacked Ukraine while Trump was President. Biden is so weak and compromised that Putin thought he could get away with invading Ukraine. That scared Sweden and Finland into NATO.

Why is UK separated from the rest of NATO?

The UK is included in the NATO, but also shown alone, because it is a UK news source trying to give UK readers information. Russia definitely has more forces than the UK alone, but does poorly compared to NATO.

But it is more than just numbers. If Russia cannot defeat Ukraine, do they have any hope against NATO? Russia's numbers have been inflated with poor equipment, poorly trained troops, and poor strategy/tactics. The only two things they have going for them is an unpredictable willingness to use violence, and nuclear weapons.

trump wanted to withdrawal the USA from NATO, so he would have become unimportant to the process of letting Sweden and Finland become members. I do not know if the rest of NATO has as much finesse as Biden does, and could have worked in Sweden and Finland, but trump would not have been a member to even decide.

Trump was twisting a few European NATO members arms to get them to pay their fair share of NATO. It worked and they paid NATO an extra $100 billion dollars. The head of NATO loves Trump. Think about these FACTS

1. Putin invaded and took Crimea during the Obama/BIDEN administration. Remember Biden was the point man for Ukraine at the time. Obama and his pointman BIDEN refused to sell Ukraine the Javelin they requested to buy.

2. Putin didn't attack Ukraine during the Trump administration and Trump sold Ukraine Javelins. Trump sent the CIA into Ukraine to train them on Javelins and train snipers. They also trained them how to communicate without being detected and other tactics.

3. Putin invaded Ukraine during the BIDEN administration. Sweden and Finland didn't feel the need to join NATO.

4. Early in the war Ukraine drove Russia out of Northern Ukraine and destroyed many Russian tanks with the Javelines that Trump sold them and the CIA trained them how to us. . Early in the war Russia lost several generals and high ranking officers to snipers that the CIA trained. Biden's initial reaction was to offer Zelenski a safe flight out of Ukraine. Zelenski famously said "I don't need a ride I need weapons" The early stiff resistance caused the US to finally start supplying weapons to Ukraine. If it wasn't for the Javelines the Russian might be drinking vodka in the capital of Ukraine today. Sweden and Finland decided to join NATO.
