First Jan. 6 defendant convicted at trial receives longest sentence of 7 years

Then AG Garland should take action. Since the right believes the FBI and "deep state" are Democrats you would think they would actively investigating and preparing charges. Our laws purposely make it difficult to charge and convict people of such crimes.

No President in the history of our nation attempted a violent coup.

If he doesn't then did we really defeat it?

Yes, I know. Our nation was strong enough to defeat it.

Of course. The riot was stopped. Congress resumed its session and counted the ballots and we elected and installed a new president. That is what they were trying to stop and it was a miserable failure. The attempt to decertify the votes in several states was also a flop as was all the court cases seeking to overturn state results.

That's like saying "Hanging John Brown stopped the Civil War". Duh. No it didn't. The Big Lie is still being pushed. Too many Americans still think violently overthrowing our nation is a good idea.

Do you think there is a likely chance of a major violent WSE terrorist attack in the US between now and November 2024? I do for the same reasons as to why it's still a problem.

150 cops seriously injured. 5 killed. Trump still is a present danger.

Maybe, but we defeated any attempt to stop the electoral count and successfully declared a new president who is not serving in office. Any coup attempt was a failure. If he does anything else dangerous he can be stopped again. If any danger exists you don't remove the danger by just prosecuting Trump. He can still become president as a convicted felon.

We will deal with those dangers as they arise--there is nothing we can do now to stop them.

This has been discussed many times on JPP. The problem is that "incite" is a very difficult thing to prove. It is like some of our JPP conspiracy theory people who want Ray Epps convicted for inciting the riot. His actions do not come close.

Even if Trump is convicted that does not mean he is no longer a danger. He is not going to prison.

Sure there is. That's what the courts are all about.

That does not stop potential danger. We can only hope Americans will come to their senses and turn against violent actions--but both the right and left have done that for years. The left in the 60's and 70's and the right in recent years.

So we learned all of the elements required to convict somebody of "inciting" a violent action and it is difficult to convict Trump of meeting all those elements.

If not, he will be charged and convicted---we can only wait and see.

Both sides are always overly optimistic that their side will win elections and find the other other side guilty of criminal actions. They are also overly pessimistic about the damage the other side will impose on the country.

The Left was violent before and during Trump's administration. The potential is there for more LW violence. That said, I think RW violence is the greatest danger facing most Americans.

Agreed on hope and I think most Americans have a good sense of right and wrong. They know bigotry is wrong, hatred is wrong and violence is wrong. Only the nutjobs and autocrats favor violence.
