The widespread support expressed Wednesday behind closed doors for Pence’s role that day is at odds with many of the House members’ public actions regarding the Jan. 6 events, including objections by 139 of them to two states’ electors.
Rep. Chip Roy (R-Tex.), one of the most conservative members of the House, stood and thanked Pence as many of the 50 members of the Republican Study Committee in attendance applauded.
Pence has spent much of the year resetting his political position in the Republican Party and has been at odds with his former boss, Donald Trump.
He and Trump will be at dueling events in Arizona this weekend. In the gubernatorial race there, Pence backs Karrin Taylor Robson, while Trump supports 2020 election denier Kari Lake.
Pence did not tell the House members whether he’d run for president in 2024, but he “indicated that he was wanting to serve the country,” Rep. Dusty Johnson (R-S.D.) said."
