Reagan ultimately won the cold war which gave us the peace dividend that we enjoyed for decades. Fighting and winning this cold war was sometimes messy as all wars are. Stalin was a psychopathic murderer of millions but he was our allie in WW2.

Government is also an entity that left to it's own devices will endlessly grow until much like a cancer will destroy the host organism. Government needs to be kept in check by the citizens it portends to represent. Our founders knew that when they penned the constitution which as Obama put it " is a document of negative rights for government ". He was opposed to that which is an anti American position. In America people have rights not government and the constitution protects the people from government.

Denigrating government is not keeping it in check. Reagan was using those kinds of phrases to appeal to the people who would keep him in office...at the cost of government itself.

Either you see that...or refuse to see it.

"I'm from the government and I'm here to help" is elegantly simple and sound logic. A good example of late is Biden passing out government checks like Halloween candy. He did this with good intentions but now we are suffering the unintended consequences of too much money being dumped into our economy chasing too few goods. Inflation is killing us and Biden is holding the smoking gun.
