In the 10-years since he turned from a political chat-show host to politician, Yair Lapid has dreamed of becoming Israel's prime minister.

Now, having taken over in a caretaker capacity, the centrist will be looking to prove that he deserves the top job in the long term, as the country prepares to go to the polls for the fifth time in under four years.

The former amateur boxer is sure to face dogged attacks from conservative Benjamin Netanyahu - Israel's longest serving leader - whom he successfully knocked out of office in 2021 by forging an unlikely alliance between eight, ideologically diverse political parties.

Following the vote to dissolve parliament, Mr Lapid, who has been foreign minister, took over because of his power-sharing deal with the right-wing, religious nationalist Naftali Bennett, who was prime minister for the past year.

He will be in charge at least for an interim period until a new government is formed after polls due in October or November, and possibly beyond if no coalition can be formed.

Of course it's important, stop being such a prick. I've already told you that he's a centrist and is committed to restarting talks with the PA about a two state solution. I wouldn't be at all surprised if he appoints Ehud Olmert as chief negotiator.

He is a naive dipshit and will be proven a massive failure and increase the threat to the State of Israel. You cannot talk with terrorists. They aren't interested in talks. They are only interested in destroying you.

Westerners can't learn these obvious truths and now European Jews will have to relearn it. :palm:

I think you're a tad cynical, if he can get Olmert and Abbas together then they may be able to revive the 2008 map.

Towards his British wards and Arab terrorists, yes. One could say that the British empire was a terrorist organization. Look at all the people they forced into subjugation.

I never said that, it's the likes of Hamas that are the bloody minded stubborn bastards. Gaza could be immensely rich if the Islamists were finally ousted from power.

It does not really matter. He is a caretaker prime minister, so is banned from making any major moves. He certainly cannot restart talks with the Palestinians, or anyone else. Israel is paralyzed by not being able to get a clear majority in any of its elections, so it keeps having election after election.
