ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — A federal judge on Thursday sentenced Derek Chauvin to 21 years in prison for violating George Floyd’s civil rights, telling the former Minneapolis police officer that what he did was “simply wrong” and “offensive.”

U.S. District Judge Paul Magnuson sharply criticized Chauvin for his actions on May 25, 2020, even as he opted for the low end of a sentencing range called for in a plea agreement. Chauvin, who is white, pinned Floyd to the pavement outside a Minneapolis corner store for more than nine minutes as the Black man pleaded, “I can’t breathe,” and became unresponsive.

Chauvin state and federal sentences will run concurrent, that sucks?!!

This is double jeopardy . He was convicted of murder which of course includes violating the victims civil rights.

Our legal system is so rotten.

I'm still not convinced Chauvin was directly responsible for Floyd's death or that his actions amounted to murder deserving of 20 years.

I think that Chauvin was, to a certain degree, sacrificed on the altar of woke politics in order to keep civil unrest at bay.

Floyd was a drugged out thug with an enlarged heart that was in such bad shape from all the drugs he took, he could've dropped dead at any time.

Did the stress of being arrested contribute to his death? I would guess that it did, but along with the physical exertion of wrestling with the cops while he was resisting arrest.

And that "I can't breathe" business..... If you can't breathe, how do you repeatedly holler about it at the top of your lungs?

Oh well.

One day nobody will want to be a cop and risk their lives to protect a society that wants to throw them in prison every time some dirty criminal causes them to escalate their use of force then dies because of it.

You versus the jury that convicted him. I saw the trial. Obvious Chauvin caused his death.

I saw the trial too.

Not obvious.

Nobody can answer the simplest questions.

1) If Chauvin's knee supposedly cut off the oxygenated blood flow to Floyd's brain via the carotid artery, what about the other carotid artery on the other side of his neck? How could one knee on one side of the neck, cut off both arteries on opposite sides of the neck?

2) If Chauvin's body weight was crushing Floyd so he supposedly couldn't breathe, how was he able to keep talking out loud? How could a knee on one side of the side of the neck cut off the wind pipe on the front of the neck?

Makes no sense.

I don't think you are a racist. But racists raise the same skepticism. Almost 10 minutes with his knee on Floyd long after he was clearly unconscious.

Also, one should not understate the ramification of being in a federal prisoner because in certain ways federal prisoners are under high security detail compared to state prison and are limited to how many phone calls compared to state prisons where inmates can make as many phone calls as they can afford. Federal prison is prison and there are no so-called posh conditions there but hard time of confinement at being under surveillance at all times. Also, the trash Cauvin will serve both state and federal prison time concurrently based on the ruling of the court and be required to pay restitution at violating Floyd's civil rights, and who will be a convicted felon forever:

Chauvin's plea deal, which Magnuson accepted in May, called for a sentence of 20 to 25 years. Magnuson shaved seven months off of the 21-year sentence for time already served — last year, Chauvin was convicted in a state court on murder and manslaughter charges related to Floyd's May 2020 death and sentenced to 22 1/2 years. He will serve the state and federal sentences concurrently in a federal prison."

All black thugs say "i can't breathe" when arrested. They hope they can later sue and get some money. Blacks been running that scam for decades.

Chauvin's conviction was purely political. The cause of death was cardiac arrest due to Floyd's ingestion of street fentanyl. It couldn't be clearer.

Chauvin is the victim of a grave travesty of justice handed down by a corrupt judiciary.

Jury convicted him you racist asshole.

I thought he WAS in jail....

He is. That was a state prison.

These were federal charges. He will be transferred out of the state maximum security prison he's in and into a federal prison. He'll serve both his sentences concurrently. One big difference is federal crimes require you to serve a larger portion of your time before being eligible for parole. Before this he could have gotten on parole after 15 years, now with the concurrent federal sentence, he will have to serve at least 18 years of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole.

Having his knee on Floyd was not a crime if it was not the cause of death.

I understand that it did not look good at all, but not looking good does not equal murder.

So again, the question is, if Chauvin's knee was only on one side of the neck allowing blood to freely flow in the other side, and his weight was not on Floyd's rib cage, allowing Floyd to speak coherently which indicates breathing, how could Chauvin have killed him?

It doesn't make sense.

Convicted by jury. Sorry, racist asshole.

Jury convicted him you racist asshole.

Juries have convicted a lot of innocent people before....

....just having been convicted by a jury does not automatically mean guilty.

Just some things to think about.

Pretty stiff for lawfully detaining a career criminal overdosing on fentanyl.
