It only appears that way because the Soviet Union collapsed. So yeah, capitalism and democracy won.

Their socialist form of gov't resulted in utter failure. At Yalta, FDR set up a political experiment, the war of Socialism vs. Capitalism. And despite being handed a vast empire after ww2, Russia lost that war and their empire, IMO.

At Yalta, Britain was stripped of its empire.

Finland, Estonia and Latvia are closer to Moscow than Kyiv is, and Finland is within easy striking distance of Saint Petersburg, and Murmansk which happens to be where Russia's most important fleet and naval resources are.

Im not talking about "Kyiv" im talking about Ukraine as a whole
Finland already had a robust defense, Sweden really isnt a concern except for the Arctic
where Russia and China have vast advantages in extraction and a possible Great Northern route.

It's just more NATO expansion. The difference is Russia no longer needs the west.

Russia abstained ( and Germany to it's credit as well) in the assassination of Qadaffi
It's been a long slow burn.. 2008 - overt offering NATO to Ukraine seems to be the tuning point.
