More than one million U.S. voters have switched their party affiliation to the GOP over the past 12 months, painting a grim picture for Democrats in the 2022 midterms.

The GOP is benefiting most in the suburbs of large and medium cities, where voters who supported President Biden in 2020 are struggling with inflation and growing increasingly critical of Democratic social issues, according to an analysis from The Associated Press.

Roughly 1.7 million Americans have changed their party affiliation over the past 12 months. Two-thirds of those have gone to the GOP, while just 630,000 have switched to the Democratic Party, according to the report.

The latest numbers from Gallup show that the president's job approval didn't budge between May and June, remaining at an abysmal 41 percent — a low it hit in April.

The results of the president's policies have not just caused Americans to sour on Biden, but also — understandably — caused pessimism about the future of our country:

Americans' satisfaction with the direction of the country has dipped three points over the past month to 13%, continuing the downward trend seen since March, when 24% were satisfied. Nearly nine in 10 Americans (87%) are now dissatisfied with the direction of the country.

And, despite what Biden and some Democrats in Congress say, the president's own party is dragging down the overall satisfaction rating. They're getting so fed up, so fast, that the number of Democrats who say they are satisfied with the country's direction went from 46 percent in March to just 24 percent in June.

Among independents, an even smaller 13 percent say they're satisfied with where America's headed, down from 23 percent in March. Since May of 2021, no more than 8 percent of Republicans have said they are satisfied with the country's direction, falling to just two percent this June.

Based on respondents' answers, Gallup concluded that "Americans' mood is the worst it has been in any midterm election year dating to 1974 and puts Democrats' U.S. House majority in significant jeopardy." No kidding.

As Gallup's release of their latest polling concludes, "Nothing has caused that mood to brighten over the past month -- if anything, it has worsened, making Democrats' challenge of turning things around before the November elections only more difficult."

America has become a regressive right wing shithole of a nation.
No need for civilized places like New England, New York, and the West Coast to be part of it.
Canada will probably be willing to take us.
And the current US doesn't deserve to have us.

Purely anecdotal but I can think of six wives (all college educated white women) I know who lean right politically who voted for Biden in '20. They were done with Trump. But they are the type that would vote in a heartbeat for Republican congressional candidates. So you have the combination of the party out of power usually doing well in the first midterms and then the dissatisfaction with Biden and its not surprising Republicans are looking good this November (although with a couple of the Republican Senate candidates we may be snatching defeat from the jaws of victory).

Edit: These women all technically live in the suburbs.

^ a few older and younger suburban women are regulars at my neighborhood pool. They were pretty vocal abut Trump. Now I dont hear a peep about politics. It's not the midterms yet, but it's evident a lot are having indigestion at their POTUS vote.

Biden is a disaster. something everyone agrees on

Indeed.

Biden is harming hard working Americans.

All we hear every day is how much of a shellacking it's going to be in November.

It's a mid-term, so we can expect the party that is currently out of power to have gains. I'd be surprised if it was anything more than average, though. People vote their wallets - but the GOP hasn't offered much of an alternative for voters who don't believe in conspiracies.

We'll see how it goes. It's going to be fun if it's just a modest gain. I'm sure conservatives will start yelling "fraud" again.

More than that; it has been a 14-15 point swing...REPUBLICANS now outnumber democrats by 7-8 points, after trailing by a similar margin just one year ago.

You're talking about the current snapshot of how people plan to vote. Not how many are actually Republicans or Democrats.

For those who don’t like Fox News here’s a PBS article about it. Sounds like a few of these voters were Democrats registering as Republicans to vote in the primary but most were people actually switching parties. From a Republican perspective it’s definitely good news. Of course these same folks could switch again in the future so doesn’t mean it’s permanent.

what is the actual effect of changing registration apart from deciding which primary you vote in ?

To my knowledge, nothing. I guess the theory is one is more likely to vote for the party they are registered for but in reality people can vote for whomever they want (in the general) and how they are registered is irrelevant

we dont have registration in VA but on primary day you can only get one ballot. the D or the R.
we started jamming the primary voting here decades ago to do our little part in nominating the worst candidate. seldom works but its worth a shot.
