WASHINGTON, June 21 (Reuters) - U.S. state election officials on Tuesday recounted how supporters of Donald Trump threatened, insulted and harassed them, sometimes turning up at their homes, after they refused to help the former president overturn his 2020 election defeat.

Raffensperger said the state had conducted nearly 300 investigations into the allegations and found nothing wrong. "Every single allegation we checked. We ran down the rabbit trail to make sure our numbers were accurate," he said.

The committee also heard from Wandrea ArShaye "Shaye" Moss, a former Georgia state election worker who filed suit over threats - including racist threats - to herself, her mother and her grandmother, after Trump targeted her by name following Biden's win in her state in the presidential election.

"It has turned my life upside down," Moss said.

In his closing statement before the January 6 committee, former US appellate court judge J Michael Luttig – one of the most conservative judges in the federal system, whom George W Bush passed over for the supreme court because Bush thought him too conservative – called Trump and his allies and supporters “a clear and present danger to American democracy.”

By not divesting itself of the big lie and embracing the truth of what the January 6 committee is revealing, the Republican party has lost its last shred of moral authority to function as one of America’s two governing parties.

Biden needs to stay out of it. It's got to be Garland's decision. We're not like twump. The DOJ acts independently. The only thing the president can do is fire the AG and hire another one.

Well, I criticized trump for weighing in on cases before the courts and the Mueller probe. So if I'm going to ask him to shut up I'm going to apply the policy to Biden.

The president cannot look like he's going after a political rival personally. This is why independence of the DOJ is important.

He can only appoint or fire the AG. He cannot direct their activities. He can suggest, but even in that situation I wouldn't. One thing twump tried to do repeatedly was weaponize the DOJ beyond Barr just covering for twump which was bad enough.

A president cannot look like he's pointing his DOJ at his political rivals. That's what THEY tried to do and it was bad.
