Over four-fifths of Americans think the state of the economy is “poor” or “not good,” according to a Wall Street Journal-NORC Poll released Monday.


Approximately 83% of respondents said they had a negative outlook on the economy, while 35% said they were not at all satisfied with their current financial situation, The Wall Street Journal reported. The latter is the highest percentage recorded since NORC began asking the question in 1972.

Only 27% of respondents said they think they have a good chance of improving their standard of living, representing a 20-point decline from 2021. Almost 40% said their financial situation had worsened over the past couple of years.

The rise of inflation was the most common reason given for the negative economic perspective, Jennifer Benz, vice president of public affairs and media research at NORC, told the WS Journal.


The annual rate of inflation was 8.3% in April, which represented the largest year-over-year increase since January 1982, excluding March of this year. The cost of gas is a major factor in the increase, with the price at the pump surging to all-time records, according to AAA data.

But that was due to inflation earlier in that period (with some of the worst of it being around June 2021.) The annualized rate for April alone was 3.98%. In other words, if prices kept rising at the same rate as they did in April for a year, then next year prices would be just 3.98% higher. That's not particularly high. The historical average is around 3.5%, so it's just a little above average. That's why the media is so nervous. They need something to sustain their negativity, so they're praying inflation comes roaring back.

You see the May data out today that inflation hit a 40 year high? WaPo had a poll that states people think it will continue to go higher. Whether that happens remains to be seen but it explains why the pessimism towards the economy from so many. When people see these high price increases at the gas pump and grocery store it’s not a figment of the media’s imagination, it’s real.

The good news is that May's data is further confirmation that we don't actually have accelerating inflation, as some had feared. Not only was it not a 40-year high, that month. It wasn't even a three-month high. The annualized inflation in May was over three points lower than it had been in March. Of course, with the corporate media dedicated to negativity, you're unlikely to hear that fact, but you can confirm yourself with the actual data.

In 2009, 2010, and 2015, there was either deflation or zero inflation. They never adjust down even when the COLA would be negative, so instead they just leave it as is. Because COLA measures deflation differently than the normal core inflation measurement, only 2009 would normally be considered deflation.

We were definitely on the verge of something horrible in 2008/2009. We should all be thankful to Obama for pulling us out of it. The last time we saw major deflation, it caused the Great Depression. Deflation was also a possible cause of the Dark Ages, though it might have been an effect rather than a cause.
