The Jan. 6 committee hearings are finally here — and Republicans are running scared

Hello archives,

They care, care a lot, that last thing they want to see is an attack proof litigation of Trump on national TV, and the proof is that as I showed, the Trump team is already preparing the defense to run in the right wing media to reassure the base (https://www.axios.com/2022/06/03/trump-january-6-hearings-republicans)

What Trump should do is just get away. Don't even be in the country during the whole thing. Maybe go hang out with his buddy Vlad, in Russia.

Hello Althea,

Not one Republican voter will be swayed by these hearings.

Which is fine. What these hearings should serve to do is to inspire Independents and Democrats to vote en masse.

There were independents who supported Trump. He could lose support. That's what this is all about. Well informed Democrats are already opposed to everything Trump. And Trump cult people wouldn't change their support if he shot somebody in broad daylight on crowded 5th Avenue.

It's all about the people in between those two groups.

But that is a good point about Democrats. The in-power party typically does not vote in large numbers during the first midterm. Democrats have some pretty big talking points. Making sure Republicans don't take over everything and sway future elections like they tried to sway 2020, holding those responsible for Jan 6th accountable, fighting for women's right to decide what happens to their bodies, and creating safer gun laws.

These public hearings are just another reason Progressives, Liberals and Democrats need to get out and vote.

Hello Concart,

The committee is going to lay out the facts of what happened leading up to and on the sith of January. Peter Navarro has been kind enough to go on television and admit the conspiracy, but the details SHOULD send chills up the spine of every single American. Unfortunately it won't because 30% of Americans are viewing the events with a preconceived belief that the election was stolen. The lack of ANY proof doesnt slow them down. When you start with a false premise, you can justify anything.

For the rest of America, it should cause everyone to abandon the GOP. I'm not sure that's enough to overcome the new laws that will allow the GOP to install their choice as President without having to deal with the VP and certification. They have made sure those elections will no longer be free and fair at the state level. They did so in plain site, and Democrats, instead of saving democracy, chose to stand on ceremony and preserve a Senate rule that has it's roots in racism. It is remarkable how fragile our democracy turned out to be.

We are going to hear about a plot, referred to as the 'Green Bay Sweep'. Using that sports analogy, Mike Pence was the quarterback, and the idea was to bribe the officials to let Trumps team cheat. But Pence refused to go along. The idea was to have Pence refuse to certify the election, and throw it back to the states, where Trump hoped that he would receive friendly treatment. False electors would vote for Trump in states that he lost. Eventually the electoral college would be so chaotic that certification would be impossible, the House would decide the presidency, and Trump would hold on to power despite losing the election. But the states also refuse to 'play ball'. So Trump tried to bully and intimidate them. The list of crimes inherent in this plot are numerous, and they involve criminal violations of state and Federal laws. This was an attempted coup. Before we rush to call Mike Pence a 'hero', keep in mind that he had full knowledge of this plot and did not reveal it. But he knew. In fact, he was aware that the plan could not succeed if he certified the vote. And that knowledge, and the knowledge of what would happen on 1/6 left Pence in fear of his life, a fear that was completely justified. He also knew that if he could be 'removed' from the process the plan had a chance to succeed. Hence his refusal to be removed from the Capitol. He believed it was an attempt to 'get him out 9of the way' by hiding him. His belief appears to have been correct, since it has now been disclosed that discussions happened about who would replace Pence in the process.

Bottom line, Trump and his cronies hatched a pilot to keep Trump in power despite the fact that he lost the election. It is absolutely frightening. And Trumptards won't even blink. And Democrats will go on television and act shocked and outraged and do NOTHING to stop this from happening again. So it will, and this time, Trumps team will play ball.

An attempted coup happened right before everyone's eyes, and Trump supporters simply do9n't care. It is what it is.

Sadly accurate. In with Trump, out with democracy. The end of the American experiment. We tried to have a government of the people, by the people, and for the people; but in the end we got an oligarchy. Bummer.

Well, it was a nice thought. The idea of America, the whole concept. I wonder if we'd be better off if we had remained subjects of the Crown...

Canada and Australia look more 'together' than the USA.

They mostly occurred on the West Coast at California ports because of a combination of new regulations imposed by Biden and California. That cascaded to the rest of the US because those same federal regulations hit the whole trucking industry for example.

Things at the border did change, because now illegal crossings are at an all-time high. Worse, unlike the Trump administration where crossers were deported, Biden has deported next to no one. The drop has been from tens of thousands a month to thousands, and falling with Biden.
Lies.

All of it. Biden is improving the ports. Stop making shit up. Ports were essentially dead during Covid. Now they're still catching up.

The hearings 'should' also result in the removal from office of a handful of home grown terrorists.

The long-awaited January 6th committee public hearings have finally been scheduled. The first one is set for next Thursday, June 9th, in prime time. The committee previewed their plans for next week, announcing on Thursday that they will "present previously unseen material documenting January 6th, receive witness testimony, preview additional hearings, and provide the American people a summary of its findings about the coordinated, multi-step effort to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election and prevent the transfer of power."

Republicans are obviously worried that some of their troops might tune in and see something that will shake their faith in the Big Lie.

Whatever happens in these hearings we can be sure that they will be different than any hearings you may have watched in recent years and it's not just because of the extraordinary subject matter. For the first time in recent memory, we will have a congressional hearing without even one obnoxious Republican grand stander seeking to derail the whole thing. We can expect that this committee will be serious and focused which is something we have not seen in public hearings for a very long time.

The Republicans are obviously worried that some of their troops might tune in and see something that will shake their faith in the Big Lie so they are plotting to "counter-program" the hearings. Axios reported on Thursday that they are deploying everyone from House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy to possibly Trump himself to fan out to Fox News, Steve Bannon's "War Room," "Real America's Voice," Facebook and Trump's own Truth Social to ensure the base doesn't lose their religion.Whatever happens in these hearings we can be sure that they will be different than any hearings you may have watched in recent years and it's not just because of the extraordinary subject matter.
