Once the precedent is set, that's what is most likely to happen. A line can be drawn between the Democrat efforts to chip away at the Constitution in general (and ban guns in particular) and the Republican efforts to chip away at the Constitution in favor of an Evangelical code.

My best advice is to work more on preserving rights instead of taking them away.

I actually came up with a multi step idea that includes current law-abiding gun owners keeping all their guns.. hang on.. I'll go get it.. I posted it to Expresslane.

What if we leave whatever guns are in circulation, offer to buy back as many as we can, voluntarily. <--- that would be step 1.

Step 2. The money. Outlaw campaign contributions from any gun manufacturer or lobbyist and make it illegal to advertise arms or ammo anywhere.

Step 3. No guns or ammo until 21.

So: If there's no money for politicians to worry about from the NRA or whoever.. then politicians can't be held hostage by the lobby. Secondly, there will be fewer guns in circulation.. you can keep yours, but now kids won't be tempted by those ads of sexy women hoisting big guns and stuff.

If you just made the sale of assault rifles illegal it would make it extremely difficult for a whacko to get one and commit one of these shootings.
You aren't going to buy one in a gun store and if buying one from a person means that person could end up an accessory to murder they aren't going to buy one there either. They would have to own one already or steal one, both highly unlikely. You don't have to spend a plug nickel of taxpayer money because there is no confiscation of guns.

clarification: AR's are NOT outlawed. They will still be legal. You just can't buy one or the ammo that goes with it until 21. And if you already own one, you keep it, unless you wish to sell it back.

You do understand that many of these "assault " rifles and fully automatic weapons carried by the gang bangers are brought across our open border do you not? Also, the democrat policy of defunding the police movement that in many of our highest crime cities, the police are no longer allowed to stop people for minor infractions and it is those very stops that produce a large number of illegal firearms.
Face it, the guns are here, now spend your time and many words demanding that repeat criminals have increased bail and longer sentences. Build the wall, harden our schools, and fund larger prisons.

No, you can't buy one PERIOD. For all practical purposes they are illegal unless you currently own one. Nobody sells an AR15 or like gun (there are about 100 of them). The ammo you could still purchase because it is a .223, it's the NATO round and it fits in plenty of bolt action rifles that would remain legal for many purposes. All accomplished with 1 law and not cost the taxpayer a dime. Make it illegal to sell or give an assault weapon to anyone.

If you could not buy one and you don't already own one it would be nearly impossible to get your hands on one. You would have to either steal one or find someone stupid enough to risk an accomplice to murder charge by giving or selling you one. Your "face it the guns are here" excuse is fucking stupid. If you made it illegal for ANYONE to sell one how many will there be around in 100 years? In the instance I posted about a real need for a semiauto that holds 12-20 rounds like the farmer that has 100 hogs destroying his farm. They would be the only ones who could acquire one. They would aquire it from ATF after that psych evaluation and a valid reason for needing one.
