Sweden to reject referendum on NATO membership

Sweden does not plan to hold a referendum on the subject of NATO membership if its parliament approves of the measure, Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson announced on Thursday, suggesting that putting the matter to a vote would be a “bad idea.”

It will be the Swedish Government, elected by the Swedish people. Most treaties are not approved by referendum.

If it did need to go to a referendum, 57% of the Swedish people support NATO membership. That number is quickly rising. Honestly, the only reason the Prime Minister is going through the normal channels (other than they are the normal channels) is that it is quicker. It would take a year to setup an unusual referendum.

In this case, the people are more in support of NATO membership than the elected officials. If she thought there was a chance that she could not get it through the normal channels, she would go for the referendum.

Sweden and Finland are shoring up the northern part of the european Russian border, and are extremely important in that regard. This is very important to Putin, and to all those who want to stop Putin's expansion.

' Democracy for the people ' does not ignore them when it comes to a major policy shift.
Sweden is in no danger of attack. There is no hurry to succumb to NATO's demands as you suggest.

The people of Sweden are not being ignored. They are forcing their reluctant politicians to join NATO. The system is working as advertised.

The vast majority of the Swedish people strongly disagree with you. There is a super majority for NATO membership, but a super-super majority believe that Russia is an immediate threat.

You are of course free to disagree with the Swedish people, but not make up claims of what the Swedish people believe.

The only real demand is that an attack on one is an attack on all. If Russia is not planning on invading any NATO nations, that is not a real demand.

Ever read about the Pearl Harbor Attack in the history books? You know how they threw a referendum before declaring war? Sure, it delayed the beginning of US involvement in the war by a year, but just to make sure the American people really believed what they said they believed, they threw a referendum first, right?

In the real world, we elect governments to make decisions for us. If they do not make the decisions we want, we elect other governments. NATO is easy to leave, so if the Swedish people believe it was all a lie, they can simply elect another government that will pull them out of NATO.
 
You've ignored the fact that Sweden is under no threat- despite what NATO arms-suppliers say.
Again- without a referendum you can't know. Without a referendum the case against NATO cannot be adequately stated..................ah......................I see
