American oil refineries shutter amid Biden's hostile fossil fuel policies

US refinery capacity fell in 2021, the first decrease since 2017

LyondellBasell, the owner of one of the oldest refineries in Houston, became just one the latest refineries to close amid rising gas prices.

"These decisions are never easy, and we understand this has a very real impact on our refinery employees, their families, and the community," LyondellBasell interim CEO Ken Lane said in a statement over the weekend.

The closure is not limited only to LyondellBasell. Houston oil analyst Andy Lipow pointed out that other Gulf Coast refineries have faced the same fate.

"This is the third refinery on the Gulf Coast that is being shut in the last couple of years," Lipow told Fox 26.

American refinery capacity has been on the decline in recent years, according to Fuels Market News latest Refinery Capacity Report. The report found that operable atmospheric crude oil distillation capacity in the U.S. fell from 19 million barrels per calendar day at the start of 2020 to 18.1 million at the start of 2021. It marked the first decrease in refinery capacity since 2017, the report noted.

Much of that dip in output can be blamed on refinery closures such as the one in Houston, with the report noting that five facilities shuttered during 2021, including the Shell refinery in Convent, Louisiana. Other states that saw a refinery closure include New Mexico, California, North Dakota, and Wyoming.

"It wasn't too long ago the country was clamoring for the industry to buy and build new refineries because they couldn't keep up with demand," Flynn said Monday.

But government pressure to wean the country off of fossil fuels has made business difficult, with Flynn arguing that "refineries are getting squeezed out of business because of stricter regulations from the Biden administration and the pressure by the government" to "reduce demand for gasoline."

The 700-acres site can process 263,000 barrels of crude oil every day into fuels and petroleum products.

This is not a time for that! Ofc, maybe that's what "The Big Guy" wanted with his day 1 Executive orders.

Fuck it, I can eat what I need from the environment forever until I can't and then who cares?

Oh, those poor refineries who want to release benzene into the atmosphere and the government won’t let. [h=3][/h]

Like that hadn't been always happening for centuries.

You can't make a cake without breaking a few eggs.

This is the decline of Western Civilization. Sounds like you have no idea how badly these policies are going to bring misery into your life.

Something I realize is that that's what they were intentionally designed to do.

How you gonna have a military if you can't provide fuel for them domestically?

This was Obama's plan all along, wasn't it?

Indeed it was. It appears he's back for a 3rd term to finish the job and take the old girl down. I'm telling you right now he should be hanged as the traitor he is.

Remember that Bergdahl thing?

How about him letting 5 terrorist leaders go?

The military had to kill 2-3 of them years later in combat.

I remember. Remember in November.

Your own facts contradict your claims. From the start of 2020 to the start of 2021, trump was president. It was only three weeks after the start of 2021 that Biden became President. The period of time you are talking about was all trump.

A key date during that period was April 20th 2020. That is the date that crude prices went negative. It was very destructive to the oil industry. Biden was not even the nominee at the time. trump was the president during that great failure.

his day 1 Executive orders.

Biden's "Day 1" was three weeks after the one year period from the start 2020 to the start of 2021. Because time moves forward, and not back, we know that what happened in 2020 was not caused by events in 2021. We can all agree time moves forward, right?

trump let 5,000 terrorists go, and basically surrendered Afghanistan to the Taliban. he said he planned on recapturing them if the Taliban did not agree to peacefully take over Afghanistan, but once you let a terrorist go, it is difficult to recapture them.

WOW! That's impressive.

Imposing the draconian restrictions is not exactly closing the spigots on the flow of fuels, but it delivers the same outcomes. More supply makes lower prices. Tight supply makes higher prices. ONE of Biden's goals is inflationary pricing.

If Trump was not deposed by the raving radicals of the US, we'd be living in a different world in general and in a different country in specific.

Whether we discuss Afghanistan, Ukraine, the border, inflation, debt, government transparency, corruption, crime, education or anything else, it's worse now than when Trump was President.

If you like consistency, then you'll LOVE the consistent failings of Biden and the gang of anti America ideologues running him.

The facts ALWAYS ruin their threads.

Any shuttering has to do with Wall St. profits. Not Biden.

For hundreds of years to come, the oil industry will be remembered for going into negative prices in 2020. It was a market failure the likes of which we have never seen. The oil industry will always be scary for investors for that reason.

Yes. It started years earlier when S.Arabia decided to teach American frackers a lesson.

Many lost everything if they invested in startup oil drillers.

Then Covid shut down the world. A once in a generation event.

If only trump hadn't pulled dozens of scientists out of China in his attempt to erase Obama from the history books...

They kept their word. No casualties until the date set by Trump for complete withdrawal. I doubt many in the 4 mos after that, either.

Some ISIS got by them and killed a lot of people that should have been evacuated months prior.

But Joe "reset" the withdrawal date from 5/1 to 9/11 for "optics". Well, he got "optics" alright.

It's an underlying reason why Putin was bold enough to go into the Ukraine. Biden exposed his incompetence to the world.

the promised legislation was already known

That was a brutal one. That would have been the late 1990's. It has been bad news after bad news for the oil company investors.

We were stuck trusting the Chinese, because trump had pulled the CDC out of China. The CDC should have advanced deployments in places like China and Africa where these diseases tend to come from.
