Putin is already claiming Transnistria, the Western strip of Moldova. The original plan appears to have been to invade Ukraine, and then soon after invade Moldova. Unfortunately for Putin, the Ukrainians fought back harder, and Biden unified the Europeans. He still might be able to fight through on the coast to get to Moldova, but that will be expensive, and he will have to think whether to start another war at that point.

I read a piece in the Moscow Times last week that concluded Putin has an almost messianic vision based on East Slavic history and Russian orthodoxy in which he sees a reunited empire of the Rus, including the Russian federation, Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, Khazakstan, and possibly Georgia. All under the political and spiritual guidance of Moscow, which is seen as the third Rome, the new Constantinople, in Eastern Orthodox tradition.

Putin probably wants more than that. He wants Europe to be in his sphere of influence, and probably a few other countries of the former Russian Empire: Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and even possible Poland.

When Putin meets with Xi, they dream of a day that the USA retreats to North America, leaving non-Russia Asia to China, and Europe to Russia. Actually, trump shares the same dream.

The Poles were always a hassle for the Russian empire to directly control, though Vlad undoubtedly would like to see a vassal state in Poland.

I don't think Vlad has much interest in the Uzbeks, Tajiks, the former central asian Soviet republics, as long as they don't lean west.

At this time, Vlad has seen the incompetence of his armed forced, so NATO should be an effective deterrent for any military moves on the Baltics.

There is a cultural war going on in Russia now, sort of like our competition with the MAGA fat asses.

Russia has it's own version of MAGA. People who came of age under Brezhnev and Andropov still believe in the empire, and believe in manning the fortress against incursions from the decadent West. People Born in the late 80s and 1990s simply do not share their elders historical milieu, and do not understand why Russia should be hostile to Poland, Croatia, Slovakia, et al.
 
Putin will take whatever he is allowed to take


He’s old and possibly even sick.



He’s thinking his legacy


That makes him a very dangerous man


He cares about no one and nothing but himself


I truly believe he will use nukes


It’s sad


But this is going to get real ugly

Putin and his cronies believe the West is divided, and that NATO will either be destroyed, or so weakened that they would not dare defend the Baltics or Poland. He can come to a deal with Germany, France, the UK, and the rest of the Western European states.

For all this to work, he first needs to get trump elected president.

There are gangs of men who circulate on the streets of Russian cities. They range in age from their 20's up to their 50's. They are usually loosely connected to Putin, and his culture war. They attack all those who oppose Putin, or even just look weak. They get paid indirectly by Putin for their violence. Russia can be a scary place.
