This should be extended to all criminal drivers not just DWIs. Speeders, red light runners, DWTs should also pay if they kill a parent. I don't think the gov has actually signed this bill yet but since it passed UNANIMOUSLY in the House and Senate, he most likely will.

april 21 2022 Tennessee bill that would require drunk drivers to pay child support if they kill a parent due to intoxication or aggravated vehicular homicide has passed.

House Bill 1834 would require a person who is convicted of vehicular homicide to pay restitution in the form of child maintenance if their victim was the parent of a minor child. Each child of the victim would receive the restitution until they reach 18 years old and graduate high school.

The payments are similar to traditional child support, in which a parent pays the primary caregiver of their child until that child becomes a legal adult at 18.

The bill had already unanimously passed in the state's House before it unanimously passed in the Senate on Wednesday.

Moving it from a criminal wrongful death to child support is making it less enforceable. If a parent does not have the money to pay child support, they can often get out of paying child support. It is based on income. Criminal wrongful death is based on not extending prison time. Not having enough money means the drunken driver goes to prison. So it is a weakening of the laws.
