I would just love to invite you to some of the comminity meetings that I attend so you can tell people what they need to hear .. like they are children who need to be told what to do.

Never mind that many of those you will be talking to are far more accomplished than you ... and never mind that the methodology of African-American survival and success within a racist system is emulated around the world and by every demographic in America looking for equality and equity .. and never mind that you always appear to be ready to break out into "We Shall Overcome" everytime you post.

I'll bring the popcorn and bandages.

Here’s a clue.

Stop telling people, particularly people with dark skin or a vagina how to vote. Stop lecturing them on what you think there best interests are.

Try listening, and letting them tell you what their issues are.

That’s what I try to do. Not that I’m perfect at it. I’m not in a position to tell black people, Latinos, or women what issues should be important to them. Personally, I am not in a position to know exactly what the most important issues are to them. And here’s what I don’t think conservatives and reactionaries get: anyone with an ounce of dignity won’t be running around begging minority groups to support them, without giving them the slightest consideration of what’s important to them.

No doubt that many white Democrats or liberals are tone deaf to the interests of minority groups or women. But here’s a tip: I (and presumably, a fair amount of other liberals) try to have the capacity to listen and understand what is important to them, and to support those causes. Liberals, broadly speaking, didn’t invent the women’s sufferage movement, the labor rights movement, the civil rights movement, or the gay rights movement. Those were movements were fought by, and in some cases blood was shed, by blacks, women, gays, and union activists. Liberals, more broadly, just had the capacity to listen to the grievances of those people, and support them in some small measure. This is a capacity that, history shows us, Conservatives lack. You all are steeped in the Norman Rockwell-version of Americana, and are evidently incapable of placing yourself in the shoes of someone who isn’t affluent, white, Christian, and often a male patriarch.


If you want to fly confederate flags over southern state capitols, if you want to tell minorities that white men are horrifically oppressed by affirmative action, and that modest attempts to enhance diversity are part of an evil, socialist, communist agenda, this does not demonstrate a capacity to step outside the comfortable boundaries of your privileged, white middle class fairy tale life style.
