bill stripping Disney of self governing status goes to Governor for signing

to establish the Reedy Creek Improvement District, a special taxing district that allows the company to act with the same authority and responsibility as a county government.

Why does Disney have this special power to begin with?
Aren’t there other businesses as well? This could cause more problems than just with Disney and may sour future businesses coming to Florida if they renege on their deals?

When moronic state legislatures use kneejerk legislation for political purposes, they don't take the time to think anything through.

With Disney governing it's property, it incurs debt and borrows via bonds to pay said debt.

Now Fla taxpayers will foot the bill for countless millions because Disney criticized the homophobia that runs rampant in the state's govt..

They'll see the folly of their idiotic actions over the course of the next year as the details are negotiated with Disney.
This will impact other businesses with the same agreement, will they also forfeit?

So the state can say counties don't have to fix county roads? Cities don't have to provide sewer systems that function?

The county and city will have to provide those services now. Local taxes are based on property valuation. Disney properties have never been valued because they are a separate local entity. I am sure Disney will dispute every attempt to value their properties for taxation. Disney won't be paying taxes this year since the process involves setting a value and allowing for disputing that value. The locals will be on the hook for all the costs while Disney says, "Go talk to your state government if you don't like it."
I bet this all goes away 11-2022, right after the elections.

sorry.but this is just stupid. Last thing I want is tax increases (im in Orange county)
It will probably reduce your taxes. Disney will have to pay more. In my home town they have larger petrochemical plants , Dupont, Goodyear, Firestone and others they keep the school taxes low and keep the schools very well funded. In fact the neighboring larger town purposely spent their school district into bankruptcy so under state law they could attach themselves to my home towns school district so they could get part of the tax money from the chemical plants. The next school election they put the same people that spent them into bankruptcy back into power.

The idiots will see the folly of the kneejerk legislation once the negotiations begin. The new law will start in 1 year as of now. There are 5 such jurisdictions affected by this law. I'm sure each will have it's own set of challenges.

Disney has $1 billion in bonds that Fla. taxpayers will be on the hook for.

The bill now heads to the governor's desk

The move could have huge tax implications for Disney, whose series of theme parks have transformed Orlando into one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations, and serves to further sour the relationship between the Republican-led government and a major political player in the state.

The special status, known as The Reedy Creek Improvement Act, was signed into law in May 1967 by Gov. Claude Kirk in response to lobbying efforts by Disney. The entertainment giant proposed building a recreation-oriented development on 25,000 acres of property in a remote area of Central Florida's Orange and Osceola counties, which consisted of 38.5 square miles of largely uninhabited pasture and swampland.

Orange and Osceola County did not have the services or resources needed to bring the project to life, so the state legislature worked with Disney to establish the Reedy Creek Improvement District, a special taxing district that allows the company to act with the same authority and responsibility as a county government.

Don’t worry, it won’t happen, all a deflection to draw attention away from his gerrymandering to include eliminating black districts

Even when he signs it it would take over a year to work out and enact, meaning there will be ample room to amend and revise. Besides, aren’t there numerous similar special arrangements made with other special Districts throughout Florida, the Villages coming to mind, if it applies to Disney’s situation why wouldn’t it apply elsewhere

Disney Losing Governing Status In Florida Likely Won't Have Major Impact

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis proposed yet another strike in the battle against The Walt Disney Company on Tuesday, announcing that the Florida Legislature will take up a bill this week to strip Disney of its self-governing status, and experts believe the move would likely not affect Disney's business in a big way.

Talk of revoking Disney's special status began shortly after DeSantis signed the Parental Rights in Education legislation, commonly known as the "Don't Say Gay," law into effect on March 28. The controversial legislation bans public school teachers from discussing sexual orientation or gender identity with students between the ages of 5 to 9.

In a statement after the legislation was signed, The Walt Disney Company said that the bill "should never have passed and should never have been signed into law" and announced it would try to help get it repealed.

On Tuesday, DeSantis said he planned to dismantle the Reedy Creek Improvement Act of 1967, which gave Disney self-governing authority and has benefited the entertainment conglomerate for decades.

Chris Lyon, an attorney and lobbyist who deals with special districts, told Politico, "Right now [Disney] can do almost anything a county or city can do, except do things like make arrests. All that would all come under review. Lawmakers could decide if they want to give them those powers moving forward."

The act states that Disney is able to appoint the government responsible for regulating its property and can impose taxes on the land and run its government services with the revenue it gains from those taxes. According to Florida Politics, Disney has its own fire protection, utilities and planning, and security services.
