Army Picks Its Replacement for the M4 and SAW

So long M16/M4, it's about time too! Going with a new caliber too, more hard hitting?!! This will be the armies first foreign made since, the Krag-Jorgensen?!! Also looks like the end of the bayonet too?!!

The Army has found its replacements for the M4 rifle and M249 Squad Automatic Weapon, handing out a contract to put new guns in the hands of tens of thousands of soldiers.

The force is awarding a 10-year, $20.4 million contract to Sig Sauer for the XM5 Rifle, which will become the new standard rifle for soldiers, and the XM250 Automatic Rifle, which will replace the SAW.

The service will also switch from 5.56mm ammo to 6.8mm, after a search for rounds better built to penetrate body armor.

"Both weapons fire common 6.8 millimeter ammunition utilizing government provided projectiles and vendor-designed cartridges," an Army spokesperson said in a press release. "The new ammunition includes multiple types of tactical and training rounds that increase accuracy and are more lethal against emerging threats than both the 5.56mm and 7.62mm ammunition."

Thanks for the reminder. This was hinted at over a year ago. Sig will own a very significant portion of the small arms used in the US military and hopefully there will be a 6.8 upper for the AR plartorm soon.
Looking forward to a new supply of M855 and other variants of 5.56 to start hitting the shelves.

$20.4 million?? That's not enough. Do they mean billion?

Anyway - so we're going to a 27 caliber rifle now. Surprised to see this as it will likely be too much for the weaker sex to handle.

This is a waste of taxpayer money. The m4 is a good gun.

I suspect the larger caliber is a compromise between penetrating power and weight of the cartridge. A common complaint from troops in the Middle East and Afghanistan is that the 5.56 has no penetration on things like masonry buildings and such. They wanted something that could chew through cinderblock and that was the 7.62 and larger rounds.

when it absolutely6 positively HAS to fire EVERY time... You need a Sig Sauer.
or so my Special OPs buddy tells me. For him it did which is why thats what he was carried. His govt issued was in the pack.

That is the cost of just starting the contract. I would not be surprised if Sig had been willing to accept zero. The cost per rifle is where they will make their money.

6.8 has about twice the energy of the 5.56.

The Glock fails to shoot about once out of every 5,000 trigger pulls, but that is more often than a revolver. Lets look at the other form of reliability. In a study of NYC police, almost two thirds of the time they shot at someone from less than 6 feet away, they missed completely. That is the most important unreliability in handgun use.

So you get off two bullet with your revolver, each which has a one third chance of hitting anything. The other guy gets off ten bullets, with the same chance. You have a 56% chance of hitting anything, and the other guy has a 98% chance. I guess under alt right math, 56% is more reliable than 98%.

Almost certainly, the guns will mostly be manufactured by American companies under license. And it will help American companies to get more global business.

I know you want to find some bad news in all this, but you are going to have to try harder.
 
The U.S. military's 155mm and 105mm guns are British our 81mm mortar is British and 120mm mortar is Israel?!! The 120mm gun on our main battle tanks are German?!! Our military sidearm is Sig Saucer German?!! All these weapon are made in the U.S., under license from the manufacturer's?!! There are competitions for these weapons and this is how the military decides who will win the contracts!

The US chose 155 mm as the size of heavy artillery because in WW 1 we selected the French Canon de 155 Grand Puissance Filloux as the standard heavy artillery piece. The US Army has stuck with that ever since, developing the basic gun into better variants. The US 105mm on the other hand was a result of the Westerveldt Board in 1919 choosing that caliber for development. The US 105mm M1A1, et al., came from that. It is only recently that the US partnered with Vickers / BAE to produce a new, lighter version that is a joint US / British design for the 155mm.
The US 81mm and 60mm mortars were close copies of the French Brandt mortars of the same caliber. It was only in 2014 that a variant of the British 81 as the M252 was adopted while the current 60mm mortar, the M224, is a wholly US design. The US development of the US 107mm chemical mortar that was developed indigenously remained the standard to 1991 when the current US 120mm mortar designed by Soltam in Israel was adopted.
For tanks, the British L7 105mm was standardized across NATO, just like the US 7.62mm cartridge for small arms was. The Rheinmetall 120mmL44 was chosen to upgun the M1 tank, again on the basis of standardization with NATO.
