New York lieutenant governor indicted in campaign finance scheme



Washington — New York Lt. Gov. Brian Benjamin was indicted on federal charges for his alleged role in a campaign finance fraud scheme on Tuesday, with prosecutors saying he sought to use his authority as a state lawmaker to steer a state-funded grant to a nonprofit organization in exchange for campaign contributions to his failed campaign for New York City comptroller.

The indictment unsealed in federal court in Manhattan details the scheme Benjamin allegedly engaged in with a real estate developer who controlled the nonprofit while he was a member of the New York state senate. Benjamin faces five counts, including bribery, wire fraud and falsification of records.

"Public funds that support grants cannot be used as currency to boost a candidate's fundraising," Jocelyn Strauber, commissioner of the New York City Department of Investigation, said during a press conference announcing the charges. "Honesty on these issues is not negotiable."

New York lieutenant governor Brian Benjamin was arrested and charged with bribery — among other federal offenses — on Tuesday.

The charges are related to a scheme in which Benjamin is alleged to have funneled state funds to a Harlem real estate developer in exchange for illegal campaign contributions.

The offenses are alleged to date back to Benjamin’s time as a New York state senator, before FEMOCRAT Governor Kathy Hochul appointed him to his current position in August 2021.

Benjamin “participated in a scheme to obtain campaign contributions from a real estate developer (“CC-1″) in exchange for Benjamin’s agreement to use, and his actual use of, his official authority and influence as a New York state senator to obtain a $50,000 grant of state funds for a non-profit organization controlled by CC-1,” the indictment states.

The illegal contributions were allegedly directed to Benjamin during his unsuccessful campaign for New York City comptroller, according to the indictment. The developer was previously indicted in November 2021 in connection with the case.
