A former Salisbury High School teacher pleaded guilty to multiple sex offenses after accepting a plea arrangement in Rowan County Superior Court last week.
Jason Scott Carpintero, 53, pleaded no contest to felony indecent liberties with a child and felony third degree sexual exploitation of a minor.
Carpintero was sentenced to a minimum of 16 months and maximum of 29 months, suspended, and placed on supervised probation for 36 months. Not receiving an active sentence was part of the plea arrangement. Carpintero spent 505 days in confinement prior to accepting the plea deal.
Carpintero will be required to register as a sex offender, among other conditions.
Carpintero was arrested by the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office on Nov. 17, 2020 and charged with one count of indecent liberties with a child.
The warrant for his arrest said Carpintero “unlawfully, willfully and feloniously did commit or attempt to commit a lewd and lascivious act upon the body” of the victim who was younger than 16 at the time. The victim was 11 years old, according to court documents.
Six days later on Nov. 23, Carpintero was arrested again and charged with five counts of third degree sexual exploitation of a minor for offenses involving a different victim. The victim was 15 years of age, according to court documents.

A Highland High School teacher charged with sexual exploitation by a school employee, a Class D felony, now faces identical charges in Linn County.
Justin David Rapier, 41, of Marion, was arrested on two counts of sexual exploitation by a school employee.
Rapier allegedly sexually abused a high school girl in his Cedar Rapids home on two occasions while he was employed at Riverside High School in Oakland.
The student, a juvenile, told police the abuse occurred on Aug. 10, 2019, and again in May 2021.
A preliminary hearing has been set for 8:30 a.m. April 15 in Linn County District Court. Bail was set at $8,000.
Rapier has pleaded not guilty to a charge of sexual exploitation by a school employee from when he worked at Highland School District, rural Riverside.
The arrest report says Rapier, a language arts teacher, allegedly had sexual contact with a girl who attended the school and sent her messages by text and social media from 2017 to 2021. She was a juvenile at the time, the report said.

America’s fed-up parents sent another set of school board incumbents to the timeout corner to reflect on what they’ve done wrong.
This time the elections were in Waukesha, Wis., a suburb of Milwaukee. The races were nonpartisan officially, yet it was a win for a slate backed by the state and local GOP.
Three Waukesha school incumbents lost their seats, one in the primary, two last Tuesday.
“Our children have endured an awful lot in the past two years navigating a pandemic that unleashed mandates, restrictive rules, remote learning and constant changes to their normal school routine,” one of the winning challengers, Mark Borowski, said on his website. He also criticized—and he ran against—“equity initiatives” that “infiltrated district curriculum,” while dividing students and “espousing falsehoods about America.”
The incumbents protested that Mr. Borowski and the other challengers were running on national GOP talking points. But the arguments had resonance.
Last year a Waukesha kindergarten teacher was suspended for a day after she refused to take down a gay and transgender pride flag she had hung in her classroom.
The local teachers union urged staff to wear rainbows in solidarity. Parents could be forgiven for wondering about this seeming focus on sexual activism instead of education.
