Russia faces a crisis of morality

I took your hint, moon, and looked up neo-Nazis in Wikipedia. You're right, the Russian neo-Nazis are a real problem!

A minor problem, Tranquilizer, but your effort to educate the forum on Ukraine's NE-Nazi problem is appreciated. Prior to you posting about them most of the brain-washed dullards would have dismissed them as fantasy.

The Azov Special Operations Detachment (Ukrainian: Окремий загін спеціального призначення «Азов», romanized: Okremyi zahin spetsialnoho pryznachennia "Azov"), also known as the Azov Regiment (Ukrainian: Полк Азов, romanized: Polk Azov) or Azov Battalion until September 2014, is a neo-Nazi[2][3] unit of the National Guard of Ukraine based in Mariupol in the coastal region of the Sea of Azov.[4] Azov formed as a volunteer paramilitary militia in May 2014,[5] and has since been fighting Russian forces in the Donbas War. It first saw combat recapturing Mariupol from Russian forces and pro-Russian separatists in June 2014.[6] It initially operated as a volunteer police company, until it was formally incorporated into the National Guard on 11 November 2014.[7][8][9] In the wake of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, the battalion gained renewed attention for its use by Russia in justifying the invasion and during the Siege of Mariupol for its role in the defense of the city.[10]

The battalion drew controversy over allegations of torture and war crimes,[11][12] as well as association with neo-Nazi ideology.[13][14] Azov uses controversial symbols,[15][16][17][18][19] including Wolfsangel insignia used by the Nazi SS divisions.[20][21]

In March 2015, Andriy Diachenko, a spokesman for the Azov Brigade, told USA Today that 10% to 20% of the group's members are Nazis.

Reports published by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) have connected the Azov Battalion to war crimes such as mass looting, unlawful detention, and torture.[94][95] An OHCHR report from March 2016 stated that the organization had "collected detailed information about the conduct of hostilities by Ukrainian armed forces and the Azov regiment in and around Shyrokyne (31km east of Mariupol), from the summer of 2014 to date. Mass looting of civilian homes was documented, as well as targeting of civilian areas between September 2014 and February 2015."[94][page needed]

Another OHCHR report documented an instance of rape and torture, writing: "A man with a mental disability was subject to cruel treatment, rape and other forms of sexual violence by 8 to 10 members of the 'Azov' and 'Donbas' (another Ukrainian battalion) battalions in August–September 2014. The victim's health subsequently deteriorated and he was hospitalized in a psychiatric hospital."[95] A report from January 2015 stated that a Donetsk Republic supporter was detained and tortured with electricity and waterboarding, which resulted in his confessing to spying for pro-Russian militants.[95][page needed]

Wow

What a crappy shill you are

Your description of Putin- or at least the description you've borrowed- does not match the facts. Should Russia collapse as a result of this conflict then you've got a point. Until then it's advantage Russia.

it was a bad mistake. I totally understand WHY ( the need for)
the invasion - but I also understand - and what he missed is Ukraine is loaded with NATO weapons.
FFS Putin's armor is worthless due to Javelin (ex.)

If he would have simply waltzed in to Donbas his security needs would have been improved-
not met but better - and Ukraine wouldn't have been put thru this misery

I've not seen any statistics that I can trust- although the photographs of the same burned-out tanks are becoming familiar.

Doesn't Zelensky remind you of another leader anxious to escape from an overpowering authoritarian regime ?

Azov Special Operations Detachment ...

Azov Battalion ...
Azov Brigade ...
Azov Azov ...

How many representatives does the Azov whatever have in the Ukrainian government, moon? Is it 0, zero or none? I think we should be told!

What good are destroyed and abandoned cities? He's not just fighting for Black Sea footage.

Putin doesn't have a choice, at least in his mind.

He belatedly realized he cannot defeat the Ukranian military on the field of battle, so he sees his only option to pull some kind of win out of this is to terrorize civilians into submission.

Javelins and stingers are defensive weapons which pose zero threat to Russia.

Even if Putin achieves a pyrrhic victory by occupying Donbass, it is still an epic strategic defeat. Putin made NATO more unified than it's ever been in history, he's going to drive Finland and Sweden towards NATO, and he's going to ensure NATO battlegroups are deployed to the Baltic nations and Poland to defend against anymore territorial expansion by Putin.

In the long run, Putin also ensured the economic demise of Russia, and they will be on a trajectory towards a third rate economic power for the 21st century.

2022 may be the year that defined the rest of the 21st century for Russia in the way 1917 defined the 20th century for Russia. In other words, two consecutive lost centuries where the enormous potential of the Russian people is squandered.
so many missed opportunities to keep Russia out of Xi's grasp
If we would have simply treated Russia with some repsect for security - but the Cold Wariors treated Russia like a stooge (Yeltsin and Clinton) or an existential threat back when Putin came to power-
or even stayed out of the Euromaidan revolution

Russia has China so it will do OK - now we get to face a united Russia-Sino alliance
because we made that happen

NATO is fine for Europe but China and Russia are already dominating the Arctic

Ukraine: who knew?

The first signs of Russia's intentions came a year ago. Intelligence from satellite imagery pointed to a Russian troop build-up around Ukraine. But analysts had little understanding of Moscow's true intentions.

That changed in mid-2021. "From summer we saw a small group of senior people planning for a full military invasion of the whole country," explains one Western intelligence official.

The intelligence gathering and analysis was a joint US-UK affair, those involved say - one calling it a "family" operation. There was no single moment of understanding but rather a picture that became increasingly clear as time passed.

Vladimir Putin seemed to believe that he had to act quickly to fulfil his ambition of bringing Ukraine back into Russia's sphere of influence. And he believed the only way to do so was by force. "He felt like he had a closing window of opportunity," says one person who was directly involved.

A crucial moment came in early November when CIA Director William Burns travelled to Moscow to warn that Washington knew what was being planned. The first some senior Russian officials knew of Putin’s intentions towards Ukraine was when they heard it from the director of the CIA, one official says.

In London the intelligence coming from GCHQ and MI6 was met with near-disbelief in some quarters. A common problem inside and outside government was that people simply could not believe that a major land war could break out in Europe in the 21st Century. It was only late in the year - after the Joint Intelligence Committee issued its considered view that an invasion was now "highly likely" - that people began to realise this was for real.

Other allies were also briefed, but many remained skeptical. Some European partners did not buy the analysis that Russia's build-up was anything more than bluff. France has recently sacked its head of military intelligence for failing to see what was coming.

The public release of information included the UK sharing details of Russian plans to install specific individuals as part of a puppet government in Kyiv, and Washington revealing plans by Moscow to stage pretexts for war, so-called false flags. American and British spies believe that publicising this material robbed Moscow of the ability to justify the invasion to its own people.

On one level, much of the intelligence was spot-on. There was, as forecast, a full invasion from multiple directions with the purpose of overthrowing and replacing the Kyiv government. It was also understood that Moscow had misplaced confidence about the reception it would receive. "They genuinely thought there would be flags out to welcome them," says a Western intelligence officer.

But one assumption did prove to be wrong: that Russia’s forces would prevail in a matter of days. Few people expected Ukraine to be still standing nearly two months later.
