Part of why California is the tech and educational center it is is because they provided free tuition for many years. Reagan stopped that. If you believe to compete in the global economy you require an educated populace, you should encourage as much education as possible. That is not done by charging many thousands for school.

Anyone admitted to college could go for free. That means that colleges will select based on who is the best academically, not based on who can pay for it with their parents' money.

All New Mexican resident can go to a state college for free.
If that was true, it would make sense. As it is now, people who are UNQUALIFIED, take out Loans (that they can never pay back) and go to College. Wall Street LOVES this because the IRS is the Debt Collector. The Little Tykes will be paying the Loan off ... forever!
