US warns of ‘breathtaking’ boost to China’s nuclear arsenal – reports

Beijing is on the verge of making a breakthrough in its nuclear arms capabilities that would see a major shift in global security balance, Admiral Charles Richard, the head of the US Strategic Command, has written in testimony prepared for a hearing on Capitol Hill, Bloomberg reported on Monday.

The admiral is scheduled to meet the House Defense Appropriations subcommittee at a closed-door hearing on Tuesday. China’s “breathtaking expansion” of its strategic nuclear arsenal means a rapidly escalating risk to Washington, Richard believes.

The admiral particularly refers to an intercontinental ballistic missile-launched hypersonic glider test the Chinese military conducted in July 2021. The test saw the hypersonic vehicle flying some 40,000 kilometers for more than 100 minutes, according to the testimony. It was “the greatest distance and longest flight time of any land attack weapon system of any nation to date,” Richard said, according to Bloomberg.

This technological advancement on China’s part would mean “serious implications for strategic stability,” the admiral has warned, adding that the US military capabilities and strategies rely on an “assumption that strategic deterrence, and in particular nuclear deterrence, will hold.”

“If strategic or nuclear deterrence fails, integrated deterrence and no other plan or capability in the DoD will work as designed,” Richard has said. Now, the US Strategic Command believes America might have to deal with two potential adversaries possessing vast and modernized nuclear arsenals: China and Russia.

Both these nations now have the capability to “unilaterally escalate a conflict to any level of violence, in any domain, worldwide, with any instrument of national power, and at any time,” the admiral has written in his testimony.

Richard has been warning about the rapidly changing strategic balance for quite some time now. He already stated, during his visit to Europe in October 2021, that China’s and Russia’s combined nuclear capabilities would send the US into “uncharted waters.” At that time, he also warned that Beijing is now fairly capable of executing “any possible nuclear employment strategy.”

Anyone that thinks we had the capability of stopping hundreds of ICBMs is delusional. We can't stop hypersonic missiles but we couldn't stop multiple ICBMs either.

The Chinese have taken to heart the lesson of WW2.....the side that can build the most is the side that wins, they dont need the best, they dont need the best trained soldiers.....they will win with overwhelming force.

Americans now builds slowly and at massively bloated prices....a sure way to lose.

WASHINGTON: A new study of US missile defenses has found that — after 70 years and some $350 billion in investment — no “system thus far developed has been shown to be effective against realistic ICBM threats” to the homeland. It’s a conclusion with which the Pentagon’s Missile Defense Agency begs to differ.

The study by the American Physical Society (APS) examined a hypothetical North Korean strike and current missile defense systems, such as ground-based interceptors, as well as more futuristic options in development, like directed energy weapons and space-based interceptors. It found today’s capabilities inadequate and future systems unlikely to do the job of defending the country in the next 15 years at least — even from a small number of North Korean missiles.

“Creating a reliable and effective defense against the threat posed by even the small number of relatively unsophisticated nuclear-armed ICBMs that it considers remains a daunting challenge,” the Feb. 9 APS report, called “Ballistic Missile Defense: Threats and Challenges” finds.

The experts have come very late to understanding how well China can build, and they have been almost completely ignored when they do figure it out and hit the alarms.

There are two types of these weapon: cruise missiles and glide vehicles. The cruise variant, of which Russia has several, can be launched from an aircraft and hit a target more than 1,200 miles away. The glide variant is launched up into space from where it then glides down to earth on an unpredictable path.

Hypersonic missiles are changing the way nations plan for their strategic defence for two reasons. Firstly, they are so fast there would be very little time - just minutes - between a launch being detected and a country's leader having to decide whether to retaliate. There is almost no way of knowing whether that missile is nuclear-tipped or not.

Secondly, their flight path, especially that of a hypersonic glide vehicle (HGV), is so hard to predict it makes interception extremely difficult.

Currently China is in the forefront of hypersonic missile development, closely followed by Russia, which has already used them to hit long distance targets in Ukraine. The US is late to the game and some of its tests have not gone well.

Britain does not possess any and is only now forming an alliance with the US and Australia to carry out research into them and how, if possible, to defend against them.

Climate? They're fucking up the money, food, and fuel supply. To think man affects the weather in any significant way is the height of ignorance and arrogance.

Well, we know what this means.
If you want to have the most survivors, be the one who strikes first.

We had the balls to resort to nuclear attack when we were the only ones with the nuclear weapons.
We still don't know if anybody has the balls to do it now, knowing that they're going to be hit back.
It will probably happen eventually, though.

Nothing is forever, and that includes humanity.
One could make a pretty good argument that we've outstayed our welcome already.

This is a great place to remember that hubris is how civilizations tend to die.

We spend a ton of money on the military and constantly tell ourselves stories about how great it is, but in reality it is now near certain that we are going to get our asses kicked if China decides that they must resort to military war to take us out (they intend to avoid it coming to that) . And remember it will not be just China we are fighting, it will be their friends as well.

The American Failed Intelligentsia even now has no fucking clue what is happening in reality space.
